Hello, everyone. I work as a full-time teacher and receive Social Insurance from a chain of vocational schools. My wife is expecting a child in the fall, in the middle of the semester, which is a busy time for me as a teacher, though I intend to take child care leave when the child is born, hopefully for at least a week. Has anybody had any experience with this situation? I'm wondering what the best way to approach my employer is.

I have found laws here and here, as well as a Q&A on the subject (when viewing the last link, see the middle of the page), but I would like to hear about any other personal experiences if anybody is willing to share.

Thank you very much.

I'd just go ahead and say to them directly what you already said here.

Of course, spice it up with some keigo for effect. Wink

There is no official child care leave in Japan as far as I know. Heck, even working women get darned little when they have a baby!

If you have been working for 6 months at your current job, you can then officially get 10 days off paid leave in the following 12 months, but other than that, it's up to your employer to be gracious or not. I wouldn't expect to be at the busy time of year, but you can't help that.

Definitely speak to your employer like Rip said. You may even get an envelope!
