If this question has already been fully addressed please forgive an anxious newbie.

As I've mentioned in a recent post, I am considering taking my little pot of saved money (about 2.5K) and simply squatting someplace in Mexico and passing out C.V.s until I get a teaching post. I have a TEFL certificate from Oxford, a Masters in Public Health, decent Spanish and close to 1 year ESL student teaching experience.

Questions
1) where specifically would be a good city to go - lots of schools, relatively low crime, affordable temporary housing etc. - any place in Michoacan by any chance? It looks beautiful in the google searches.

2) Is there a best hiring-season? Is it variable by school-type? If so - when do the professional language schools hire?

Also, my rough plan is at some point to return stateside and pick up a teaching degree and try to parlay the total into a job - anyone know of how realistic this might be?

Thanks for all suggestions.

What do you mean by professional language schools?

Elementary/Prepa/Uni jobs do most of their hiring starting now, and continuing on until August (or later if they are still short on staff). The better the school, the sooner you want to apply.

Language schools hire nearly any time of the year. Getting a job depends mostly on whether the school is in need of more staff, or not.

Doing the business circuit is also similar to language schools, I think, in that you can find work nearly year round.

The worst times for language/business classes is during holidays, and high vacation periods (like now) as people are simply too busy having fun to attend classes! Smile

Yes, Michoacan is beautiful but SLP (San Luis Potosi) has a lot of schools, it's relatively very safe (conservative), and is always gagging for teachers. It also lies within easy reach of many far more interesting cities for travelling purposes.

Why Michoacan? I agree that it's a gorgeous state but don't think it's one of the best places to turn up and just find a job. I had a few friends try that in Morelia but without much luck- they ended up in Guadalajara, and most other places in Michoacan are smaller and only have one or two places that hire foreign teachers. It would all depend on luck.

It's not the best time of year either unless any teachers walk out over semana santa and the school needs a replacement til July. If your heart is set on Michoacan I was there for 2 years and you can PM me for my ex-employer's details and an honest review of the place (good and bad).

Good luck.

The best places to get good paying jobs are Monterrey, Mexico City and Guadalajara (not in that order, necessarily). Generally, pay is lower in smaller cities unless, for example, you nailed down something at one of Tec de Monterrey's satellite campuses.
