Someone called Wailing_immam suggested that private companies in China may offer high salaries - he mentioned 26,000 but I can't find his thread again. Does anyone have leads on such companies? I have 20 years exp. including as a 'Foreign Expert' in She Da, Beijing, PhD. English, BUT I'm 58. Sorry to be mercenary but my savings have been basically stolen, I have no pension, and I need to earn real money i.e. living salary + ability to save every month. Of course, add to that the fact I have one foot in the grave (or so employers seem to imagine). Any leads would be most welcome. Thanks

My experience says to look into the corporate world. I was 53 when I started working full-time in my present company - NOT as an English teacher. Many Chinese companies are now looking for "older" foreign experts with skills and experience other than English to help them "westernise".
We also have at least two other foreigners working here who are nearer 70 than 60!
Good luck.

There are jobs in China that employ folks in their 50s and 60s. I just came from a job where some of my co-workers were in that age range. You said that you have plenty of experience and that is good because with those positions you definitely need it. These are jobs that require real teachers, not backpackers. I suggest that you contact Mr. Zhang Wen Lei at the Qianhuang International School, Changzhou, Jiangsu. They do the SAM program (South Australian Matriculation Program), which is essentially IELTS, mathematics, physics and chemistry, and quite academic. I just did this and it was a great job. The only real issue regarding this job is that it does involve some heavy preparation, lots of tests and markings, the salary is relatively modest vis-a-vis the work load and requirements, and last but not least, Mr. Zhang has a serious temper problem and his female assistant is a bad person. The last two will definitely test your patience. However, if you can put up with that, this is a very good position. I enjoyed it very much.

As I have written elsewhere, I recommend that you play a little at the game of making a living. Cool

I sense that you have forgotten that the sun is but a morning star.

I am one-hundred and ninety-one years old, teaching literature at a College in China, and making 4x more than I can spend. I teach two days a week and enjoy an employer-supplied and furnished western-style apartment a 15-minute walk from my classroom.

I have heard a rumor that in Liaoning Province new hires should be under 60, but I'm sure this rule - if it indeed exists and is enforced - does not apply country-wide.

I'm sorry that you were robbed of your life savings ... I invite your PM if you want to process that inconvenience further.

The rich man is always sold to the institution which makes him rich. Absolutely speaking, the more money, the less virtue ... Cool

PM me. I'm in the same boat as you. I may be able to help.
