See the portions of the Wikipedia article on emos starting at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo#Fashion_and_stereotype, especially the last paragraph.

Do a google image search for "emo hair".

My teenage informant, when I asked her why this homophobic violence is focusing on emos, said "Who knows? Emos mostly identify themselves as bisexuals."

Not at all MO! I teach kids of that age, and am a few years younger than you, but I only recently heard of the term. Its associated with a type of music (which type, I really dont know), and also with the fashion, and behaviour of individuals.

The scary thing for me is that emo has come (at least here, where I teach) to be a person who is not just sad, or going through "teenage depression", but someone who is suicidal. A fellow co-worker told me how for Halloween, one of her students (not an emo) dressed up in that style, with drawn on stitches at her wrist (as though she had attempted to slit them).

Everyone has the right to express themselves, but when something is so strongly connected to suicide, it can be scary.

Yes, that's quite scary. It's always very disturbing to read of the increase in teen suicides (and suicide attempts) in the States, don't know about the stats for Canada. I wonder if this is also true in Mexico or is the emo craze here just a superficial fad with the none of the alarming psychological underpinnings it has north of the border.

On a personal note, you are so sweet to describe yourself as just "a few years younger than you" (meaning me) !

Homophobes may hate bisexuals as much as (or more than) homosexuals because of the ambiguity involved.

This all brings me to a question... When I first moved to Mexico I was led to believe that the south was more tolerant and socially liberal than the north. But recently, some Mexican coworkers corrected me and said that it's quite the opposite... that the north is more progressive, and the south is more traditional. Any thoughts anyone? I've only lived in the south, so it's hard for me to make a comparison.

The hostilty against emos is beyond homophobia. The aggressions against them have strong tones of homophobia, but the reality is that the teenagers and young people have reacted against them because of their fashion. Some think that emos are just posers, dressed in a dissident style (kind of gothic and rocky), but actually they are into "soft" music; also they are labelled of being too "emotional", rejecting macho stereotypes. Moreover, punks, for instance, argue that emos dont have a political consign. Paradoxically, browsing online, I found that one guy who hates emos he confesses not being homphobic which, I think, is kind of contradictory.

Rock culture is very macho orientated whereever, and hostility against emos and goths is not just in Mexico. Here in the UK, just recently, a goth young female was murdered by two teenagers just because of her looks; actually the two teenagers started attacking her boyfriend and when she interceded to protect him got beaten and died. Really sad.

Possibly the good thing about the whole Emo issue is that authorities are becoming more concern about how teenagers are being educated. After this incident in Queretaro, 2 or 3 dozens of teenagers were convicted and their parents, because of the local law, will be subject to liability in case their children get involved in similar incidents while they are under their supervision.

For those who mention that Emos did not have political consign, they are showing us the opposite. There have been "for-emo demontrations" in many Mexican cities. Even in Queretaro, emos got lots of support, which is showing us that Mexican society will not remain silent to hate crimes.
