Is it worth it to go to tesol in new york? Do companies typically hire there on the spot? It's quite a distance from us so we're trying to decide if it's worth our time and money to go. Any info would be great. thanks in advance |

If you have a good resume (c.v.) and have a good 'interview' - there is a good chance that you would be offered a spot at one of the Universities or Colleges. Universities also get to 'see' you and can get a better idea of who their applicant is, rather than through long distance electronic ways.
A friend of mine had a good resume and portfolio, and was hired by Qatar University when he attended the conference in Seattle last year, and it really paid off for him, as he has a good post in Qatar now.
It can be well worth the 'investment' in time and money to attend a conference, and you get to see a lot of potential employers and get their cards. Good for the future.

Absolutely true what ghost has said.
When I mentioned on another thread that I was going to TESOL-Arabia, I had some smart remarks about wasting my money to go.
Well, smart remarks aside, I did go.
As my first conference of any kind, I was thrilled. I met so many people in the job fair room, chatted at the cafeteria with so many people from Somalia, the US, Oman, the UK and so much in between. M colleague who also flew from Taiwan iterated he felt much the same.
He has received a total of four or five job offers (The Qatar Mil. School contacted him yesterday), and I received a couple myself. I've settled for a Saudi university.
It's an investment that really paid off. It was not a gamble to attend because I followed some of the older posters advice and they were spot on about the recruiters.
Over the phone, I suck. In person, I have charm that cannot be conveyed via video-conference either.
Now, does the NY conference offer job interviews on the spot? I'm not sure, but the offers may come later. One does get the feeling an interview went well (or not) though. You can just tell. However, as NYS TESOL website suggests, they only post jobs for NY state and adjoining states. Hence, because your post is on a ME forum, you need to do more research about what they offer as it appears they are a localized organization and refuse to publish foreign jobs.

Yaano, MyTrunkShow...good on ya. There's sooo much more to get outta the TESOL events...such as the pedometers that were in the grab-bags (Really, Christine, I love it!) at the most recent event. But, don't forget outside of the Job Fair (which I feel has been poorly run over the past 3 years!) there are the wonderful presentations where brave individuals get up in front of their peers braving some very pointed questions.
Good luck in Saudi. Saudi sucks, but it's whatever you make out of it. I always kept my powder dry and bit my lip before I upgraded my creds to get outta that situation. BTW, I bought a house from my winnings in Saudi.
Getting back to the point. The TESOL conferences are great for jobs. I've always been hired from going to these conferences. Sometimes, on the spot (IPA was one, but the offer didn't guarantee the Eastern Province which was a deal-breaker for me...a bummer as the recruiter whom I was offered a job by was recently at the latest TESOLArabia conference is quite a nice fella) but usually I got an offer at a later date... I definitely consider attending the conferences a valuable investment in your employable future.
Good luck to all out there that put in the expense and effort to go to these events...but try not to miss the good works that go on in the presentations!

Thx NCTBA.
BTW, my colleague got a job offer form IPA in Riyadh. He's leaning toward this one over all others..even though my Saudi job offers the standard KFUPM holiday schedule and IPA has a few weeks less, although a slightly higher salary.
Yeeeehaaaaaaaaaa!
Oh, did I tell you that I had 5 days holiday for Chinese New Year last year, including the Sat. and Sun. holiday!!!! I also had a Tuesday in April and a Mid Autumn Festival Day in Sept. + 4 other days total....
I'm in heaven. I've paid the price of E. Asian experience. I work really hard...and I also f....c the dog when culture suggests as innovative work is ill regarded here. I rarely call in sick. Maybe 1/2 day a year. My gosh, I'm over the moon!!!!! Almost 4 months holidays. I am so looking forward to being low key and paid in a currency that is higher than a turn of the century peso. Wow....

I agree that you have to think of attending TESOL International as an investment. I still remember my first TESOL conference. As a young grad student, I had to scrape together the money not only for the conference and the airfare, but also to buy a couple of nice suits for interviewing. Never was money so well spent. I got my first great EFL gig overseas, making what seemed like a fortune back then.
Since then, I have never regretted making the investment to attend TESOL. Every time I have gone seeking a job, I have found one. Even when I haven't gone seeking a job, I have made contacts that made it possible to get another good job later. It's also the one place where we TEFL migrant workers get to see our old friends from previous jobs overseas. The conferences are too big and very tiring, but most of the time they are worth the money. |

Just to inform anyone that was confused by this. The annual TESOL convention for the US will be held next week in NYC. It is not a conference just for the state of New York (though they likely have a state conference).
The job fair for the big TESOL International conference will be interviewing for jobs all over the US and the world. Most major ME employers will be there. I know people who have interviews scheduled for Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi employers.

From www.nystesol.org

New York State TESOL JOB OPPORTUNITIES
National Teacher Recruitment Clearinghouse
NYS TESOL posts jobs in New York and adjoining states only.
For information on jobs in other states or overseas, here are some websites to try:
TESOL
Dave's ESL Cafe
ALR's Job Shop
Other TESOL affiliate web sites
http://elf.georgetown.edu/ |
Ah, got it. The above is the TESOL organization of New York State whereas this year's TESOL is in New York. Sorry for the confusion.

The job board at the www.TESOL.org is quite current and the largest I've seen outside dave's eslcafe.
Actually, I'm surprised I've never come across this job board before. Over the years, I recall posters asking about alternative websites to Dave's for jobs. This website has not been mentioned or I would have linked to it.
It is relevant for both international jobs and repatriating teachers.
Are there other job boards like this?

The job section that I found in the dropdown menu is only for the employers registered for the convention - and to allow you to re-register for an interview. In the past when they had a jobs section (during the rest of the year) you had to be a member of TESOL with a password.
Let us know if you can find another jobs list on the site. I couldn't find anything else.

Here is the link to the page where you can select "Job seekers."
http://careers.tesol.org/
If that link does not work go the homepage. Click on the CAREERS option from the choices that go across the top of the page. Then click on the first choice which is 'Online Career Center."
Peruse, drool at the lucrative postings, be dismayed at some of the low salary packages and be happy to know that there is ESL related work available after repatriating (for Americans.)

Not that one my good man,
The hole punch at the end of the counter. It isn't spiked but it is as sharp as a tack.
