Well, it's not that I object to British usage at all (being the child of Scottish parents), but that it is predominantly British in usage and in the accents used on the tape. In general, Japanese kids are exposed to American English more frequently than British in the public school system. Headway presupposes that the majority language is British English. I would prefer to teach from a text that gradually presents other varieties as a matter of course.
I'm Canadian by the way. Sometimes I have a heck of a time with the public school textbooks because the spelling, usage and context are predominantly American. |
