I'd love to know how all these little differences evolved.

Exactly,

if I was still in grad school I would write some nonsense about the in diffeence in grammar allowance for collective nouns reflecting the socialist bent of modern europe vs the traditional individualism of the states.

trite maybe, but it gets published

Quote:
UK: he's in a serious condition.

USA: he's in serious condition.

why, do you think? because of the way we perceive "serious condition" as a whole phrase or as an adjective + noun ?

U.S. does say "he is in a bad way" which is a little informal, I guess

Right, MO39 ... but wait, there's more!

In the Callan textbooks, they teach ... "Have you a book?"

Now I'm sorry, but that sends shivers up and down my spine. Laughing

Britspeak will do that every time to us Yanks. Smile

Those shivers can be quite stimulating, you know...

Britspeak would be Have you got a book or Gotta book?

The BNC has 312 cases of have you got a for 51 cases of have you a and 188 of do you have a.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the stats, SJ. Is there any reason for using one form of the questions with have over another?
