Here's their School of Foreign Languages (Chinese) click on the links and look at the pictures. They have an English page too, but it seems to be just aimed at recruiting foreign students...

The Chinese students look like a friendly bunch at least. It's probably a 3rd tier University, so most of the students are either not at a very high level academically, or come from poorer local families. Most will try hard, the others might just need some encouragement.

I see they also have a continuing education dept and an overseas study dept, so you might have a choice of where to work.

HuNan is a less well off part of China, but having Mr. Mao as a local has helped a bit. It does tend to mean some people are a little more Chinese 'old school' than the more up to date parts of China as well though.

Cost of living is way lower. But, if TianXin (Sky Heart) District is on the outskirts of ChangSha, in a development zone, or whatever, then that adds travel expenses (buses are cheap, but finish early in the evening) to get to the fun parts of ChangSha, which is a pretty good city. A bit too polluted (air), but welcome to China!

If you can get work in any of the University campuses next to YueLu Mountain on the west bank of the river in ChangSha, that'd be a better option.

I was having a look at it but it would seem that you can't bring a local friend to your apartment and the single accommodation sounds like a bed sitter. Also they are wanting 20 foreign teachers for the coming school year so not many can be staying on. Top pay of 5,500 RMB for 18 hours plus by the sound of it two hours of English corner. The hours seem open ended somewhat too. Anyway 20 hours for a top pay rate of 5,500 is hardly great for a good teacher is it. They do not pay for the summer holidays as it is a ten month contract, 1,500 RMB for a bonus instead of two months salary. So it isn't something to get excited over.

If the place isn't honest with the students then how can they be trusted by us?

Wow, thanks guys!

To answer your questions Aristotle: four years exp. teaching Brit. Lit., Am. Lit., Reading, SAT prep. I have little knowledge of China or its people. Prob. will be traveling w/ my girlfriend (also a teacher).

It seems like every article or blog I read about teaching in China is negative. I realize many are sour grapes and others are written by unqualified drifters. But, I'm getting discouraged.

Anda, where did you find the info. on visitors to the dorms? Just curious, I looked at thier website and didn't see that.

Thanks again for the info.

I tend to read between the lines!

"The accommodation is cozy with all living necessities. There are a gym, a game room where you can build up your health and have fun with other foreign teachers, TV rooms and Movie rooms in which students can be invited on the ground floor of the new Foreign Experts' Building."

I wondered if anyone has any updates as to what it is like to work at this University. It's been a while since the last post and I've been offered an interview.
I don't really need info on Changsha as I've read several posts. I'm more interested in any comments on the University, its work environment and accommodation offered.

An agent whom I never contacted wrote to me about a position at Changsha U. I expressed a lukewarm interest ( at three-word reply) and next day the recruiter gave me a name and a time to call that Changsha U person. I was to be sure to mention his name. So if a Uni is so cheap that they can't even spot you a phone call for the initial interview, I'd look elsewhere.
