The problem with every "conference" I've attended here is that it becomes nothing more than a series of talks or lectures by those wishing to promote their latest research/theory/idea/book/program. No workshops, no social activities outside of meals, no question periods, no displays and no interaction. |
We will have Q&A/Discussion sessions.
We will have social activities, including hanging out at a West Lake
lakeside/quiet/open-aired Tea House.
We will rent a large boat, for folks willing to split the cost.
For folks interested, we can have some fun doing movie-based role plays, with students from the Zhejiang Drama Institute, in English and/or Chinese.
We welcome PROPOSALS from folks for:
*Presentations
*Workshops
*DEMO classes.
Please give specific INFO for ABOVE, as well as your CV.
This is a non-profit event. Presenters will receive an Honarium covering train transportation and accomodation at Zhejiang U., Yuquan Campus.
Further details will be posted soon at the Website: www.chinatefl.com
Feel free to PM me for further INFO.
We expect to have 100-300 FTs.

BELOW are Drama-related activities at the upcoming International TESOL
Conference in NYC. Drama-in-the-Classroom is not-the-same as Theatre-on-the-Stage.
At our Hangzhou Conferecne, my MovieMagic presentation and DEMOs will focus upon using movie-based Role Play etc.

Hi folks:
For those who may be attending the upcoming TESOL Convention in New
York City, there are several drama discussions/demonstrations/
presentations which you might like to attend.
On Thursday, 4/3, I will lead a discussion group at 1:00 p.m. on "Why
Teaching English through Drama Works". That will take place in the
Sheraton, Central Park East.
Then, from 2:00 - 3:00, I will present at
the EV (Electronic Village)Fair "Classics" on the work of our EV
Online drama sessions of the past five years.
On Friday 4/4, George
Plautz and I will lead a presentation at the EV Fair on this year's
EVO_Drama workshop from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Please do drop by and say
"hello". It would be great to meet face to face.
Also on Thursday 4/3, at 4:00 p.m., there is a demonstration entitled,
"Places Everyone! Incorporating Drama in the Classroom" led by Shannon Paschall in the Sheraton Riverside Ballroom, and at 5:00 p.m. on the same day there is Hui-I Shaw's presentation, "English Learning through Drama in Taiwan" in the Hilton, Gibson Suite.
On Saturday 4/5 at 7:30 a.m., there is "Enhancing Critical ESL
Literacy through Drama" by Linda Galloway. This will be in the Bryant
Suite of the Hilton Hotel. Also on Saturday, EV0_Drama's JUDY TRUPIN
will be leading a workshop, "Health Literacy Activities for ESOL
Beginners" in which she promises some use of drama technique. (You
bet! Knowing Judy!) This will be held in the Petite Trianon, Hilton
from 3:00 to 4:45 p.m.
I will also be sitting as the drama "expert" at the Speech, Listening,
and Pronunciation Booth at TESOL from 4:00 - 5:00 on Wednesday, 1:00 -
2:00 on Thursday, and 11:00 to 12:00 on Friday. If you are in the

I just returned from giving a Movie Magic MULAN presentation at NanChang's Normal College...as well as at an International School.
Students here...all over China...respond very well to MULAN.
And the Songs are quite relevant:
* When will I be Me?
* I'll make a man out of you
For change to come in China, it must be user-friendly for Teachers/Students. Using movie segments can be so.
DEMOs will e given at the Conference, and folks will be able to:
* test out the approach with my students
* test out the approach as a LEARNER of Mandarin, using segments of Chinese movies |

Which ZheJiang Uni (ZheDa) campus are you saying could be the venue for the conference?
YuQuan (near the N-W corner of West Lake) lovely, old, leafy campus
ZiJinGang (some way up in the N-W suburbs of HZ) big, shiny, new buildings spread out on a big, new campus
XiXi (partway between the above two) cramped, stale city campus
other?

By the way, I've been wondering why a recruiting organisation is going to play host to a conference of FAOs away from the presence of FTs. What is the itinerary for that extra day?
If we are in town on that day can we come along and join in?
Cynical old me is imagining you're all getting together to scheme up ways to keep the salaries of FTs at 1998 levels for another 10 years, despite rampant inflation inside and outside of China.
Or, perhaps, how to write ambiguous contracts?
Does anyone else have suggestions about what they might discuss?

Yes...the FAOs won't be attending Teachers' workshops.
They'll be having their own workshops on, I was told today:
Quote: |
How to recruit qualified FTs |
Harvard Business Reviw has emphasized that organizations raison d'etre actually is
Quote: |
To recruit and RETAIN quality people |
Bringing the 2 groups together can help promote some much-needed DIA-LOGUE.
Note that FAOs complain that they can't get qualified teachers.
They need to Note that when salaries are higher, qualified teachers will be more-in-China.
Note also that FAOs don't control the budget, a la the olde 'mei yo banfa" syndrome.
But...it's a start. It's worth a try.
ChinaTEFL is going to promote well-qualified FAOs who have good records with handling their FTs...as a means of creating a culture-of-excellence.
Note that the FAOs will have their main meeting on Friday, then Saturday before lunch FTs and FAOs will have a panel, with Qs from the audience of FTs and FAOs. After lunch, FAOs will be on their on. Some may stay to attend FT presentations/DEMO classes.
I certainly hope some will see my Movie Magic approach. I have just begun using segment-by-segment of Michael Moore's SICKO. Truly an empowering/liberating learning environment can be cultivated with that movie. A particur element, in the spirit of Krashen, is that the movie has:
*real message
*real interest
With people telling their actual stories/dilemmas...rather than actors...there is a special dynamic...the voices are real...not acted!
The attention of the students...as I watch their eyes while I stand off to the side..these kids are really attentive!!!
We use segments in succession...each focusing upon a particular case. ..showing it twice...with subtitles in both English and Chinese (via the computer). Then I have them role play:
*as patient and insurance company
*as patient and reporter
*as patient and friend
Rather than merely relating/narrating the story, the individual in pairs/small groups play roles. This is a powerful/easily-developed dynamic.
BTW: We are looking for folks to have discuss-in-group/present on topics such as:
*Psychology of Chinese students and the EF classroom...and creative FT approaches for promoting learning
*promoting writing skills
*promoting listening skills
*the mind of the child...and EF learning
If you have interest in presenting for ABOVE (or other topics), kindly send me a PM. |

My heart soars like an eagle to hear of this conference. I attended Korean conferences religously during the eight years I was there. Every conference inspired me and I couldn't wait to get back to my classes and try some of the activities and theories I had learned.
I think the one thing they did which contributed to the success of KOTESOL was to prohibit political discussions and focus on language teaching. I was kicked out of the organization two years after I left for saying on line that I thought Koreans were good listeners and Chinese were good speakers.
I am hoping that there will be many Chinese English teachers present. It is one thing that I miss in China, being able to work as a unit with the local English teachers. |

Well. un, thanks for the updated details. I see my earlier cynicism may have been misplaced... You've obviously got your head screwed on, might not be quite at the same angle as the rest of us, but then who does? Everyone's got their own take on the world, don't they...
I really hope ChinaTEFL are taking some organisational input from you for the FAO part as well.
Wouldn't it be good for FAOs to discuss such a question, especially your HBR supplemented version, with FTs...??? I still ask, what if FTs are free on that Friday, can they join in...? If not, why not?

Yes, why have salaries for foreigners, particularly at Govt institutions, barely changed in the past 5-10 years. Current advertising doesn't show any real change in that....
What about the fact/idea/story/rumour that the Chinese Govt gives Govt schools and Unis a whopping great allowance for foreign teachers' expenses? 15000rmb/month per teacher. If the salary is only 3500-5000rmb/month + accommodation (500/month on campus, or upto 3000rmb/month off campus), that leaves a whole heap that someone at the schools and Unis is pocketing/redistributing...
Fact or myth?

ABOVE questions have been forwarded. Responses will be posted.
It's an evolutionary process...
We hope to have INFO/presentations on Environmental Education and FTs...in our classes, working with groups such as Green Volunteers.
US PeaceCorps Volunteers (I was a PCV in Africa) as English Teachers in Sichuan etc. jave a major focus upon Envoronmental Education. We hope to have them participate at the Conference.

Volunteers recently co-hosted a four-day workshop with provincial educational officials to integrate environmental protection themes into the core English Language Curriculum used at teacher training colleges. The training was held at Wolong Nature Reserve, a critical habitat for the endangered Giant Panda. |

Green Earth Volunteers
Green means life; green means the future. In order to build
We come together, acquaintances and strangers; young and old to protect our surroundings and to ensure a beautifully green and sunny homeland.
All this is not the oath of the Green Earth Volunteers, but these sentiments flow from all our hearts.
The Green Earth Volunteer Organisation is very young, for it was only towards the end of 1996 that we took this name. Our first green activity, initiated by a few journalists and scholars, was 'adopting' a tree. At the briefing to launch this activity, we learned that although there has been voluntary tree planting in Beijing for 15 years, many trees languished or even died before reaching maturity because they were not cared for. The work involved for the successful growth of a tree is 30% planting and 70% cultivation.
So we gathered -- college students and middle school boys and girls, whole families, all ages from the youngest at 6 years of age to oldsters in their seventies. We named ourselves Green Earth Volunteers.
Green Earth Volunteers have set up a Green Earth camp. Now, city children learn how to grow vegetables. When some of them used a spade for the first time, they hardly knew which end to use. When they spied the first shoots pushing up from the soil, they jumped up and down and yelled in excitement. To see these children savoring their own vegetables, this green food, is a sight that will stay with one for one's whole life. |

I supposedly work at a 3rd tier uni . They are now using student teachers from universities in the west. They are volunteers. Now if it is true that the school gets 1,500 for their services from Beijing , this is a hell of a deal for them.
Interesting times here in China. |

I doubt this figure. I would say they get 15,000 for airfare. I was told that they get airfare from a school that didn't give it to me because I wasn't returning to Canada. I know they pocketed it.
My last job was hilarious with the final payment. They gave me this sheet with 5,000 and change on it and I was to sign it. I said I wanted itamized bills and then they brought out sheet number 2 with 12,000 on it and I still asked for itamized bills and finally I got 19,000 which was more than I expected because I wasn't expecting airfare. Anyway you must fight here to get your promissed dues. I met a teacher from the other school in my city who was also on his way out. He got his final payment in an abandoned building. It was like a drug payment he said.
What really needs to be done is for people to demand money up front. I noticed that where I live half the restaurants want the money up front before you eat.
Anyway this conference should not be the place where we talk about these things. We should be focusing on pedagogy if we want to have an organization that will be respected by the authorities.
I'm excited by the ecology programs. The timing is perfect . We can talk about these things without being chastised for criticizing China. |
