When you apply for your passport They give you an envelope to fill out you need to fill out your address on. They will send you your new passport in that envelope. If you can't find a guarantor, the total renewal fee comes to about 16,500 yen. Pretty damn pricey in my opinion but what can you do?
I guess now that I've got my new passport I need to go to the visa place and get my visa transferred to my new passport. Has anyone done that before? Is it free? Do I just need to take my two passports to the place and get them to do it? Are there any forms to fill out? |

One more quick note...
If it is at ALL possible to renew your passport while home in Canada, DO IT! It's not a huge deal, but all passports issued here are not machine readable, which means you won't be able to use any fancy-schmancy fast check in lines etc. |
I renewed mine in Japan and it's not machine readable as you said. However, I have NEVER spent any more time in the lines as compared to everyone else with a machine readable one. The Immigration Officer just rolls his or her eyes every time and types in the numbers and I'm off. Not a big deal. |

That's great news about the machine-readable passports! FYI, I was referring to automated check-in booths at airports, which you can use with a machine-readable passport, but not without one. Really cuts down time if there are a lot of folks checking in for a flight
When I had mine done, they mailed it back to me...I didn't have to go in to pick it up in person. |
