My foreignness has only ever been to my advantage. I have been involved in accidents where I was completely in the wrong, driving cars and motorcycles. In these situations I feigned complete ignorance of Indonesian, and the other parties or police officers (when present) would look at me as though I were a baboon from outer space, then let me be on my way. I have been stopped by police for a routine inspection-riding a motorcycle with the registration at home and no form of identity on my person. I successfully used the same tactic.

Nowadays, I wouldn't think of driving a vehicle without all the right documents, but for obvious reasons I have absolutely no desire to drive a car or motorbike in Jakarta.

Maybe the cops are a bit meaner in these less innocent times too.

Yes, I can confirm that this does work. Police officers here are not very bright, and tend to get so frustrated with the communications breakdown that they eventually give up. This is emphatically not the time to show off your Indonesian language skills.
