I posted this on the China forums already but no response... I'm currently teaching English in the north of China, in Qingdao. My grandfather in Taipei is really sick so I want to fly back for the May holiday and visit him, but I don't know how to get from one place to the other and back within the three day period and without costing around US$1000. Can anyone give me any advice on where to find cheaper flights, and on how to possibly fly through Korea instead of Hong Kong? I'm asking around looking for a travel agent, but no one seems to know how I can find one, and everyone I ask for advice has no clue..

On Taiwanese television they used to have ads promoting Tokyo as a hub for travel between Taiwan and the mainland. Maybe that could be a more cost effective route for you.

Also, check out travel agents. Many of the best deals for intra-Asia travel don't seem to get posted on the web (at least not in English...).

Qingdao is a pretty major city, there's got to be some travel agents there.
If not then look online here

I've used them before and they were pretty reasonable @ the time.

I leave this weekend. I talked to my school and they called several travel agents and airlines for me.. they called for me because they figured they could bargain better than I could with my Taiwanese accent.. they're so nice.. elong is probably an exception, but apparently in China you can bargain with most airlines and, if you're skilled, wrangle a 40% discount. the roundtrip tickets were expensive (about US$650) but that was after the 50% discount they got for me.

next trip to Taiwan I'm taking the boat...
