Just looking for an update. It's almost the end of the first year. Have things smoothed out? The no-contract issue: is that resolved? Good support in finding your accommodation? Help!

I've just posted elsewhere if your looking for your update. As for your questions about housing..... I'm not so sure anyone in Abu Dhabi has an easy time finding housing. I'm certainly glad that I don't have to deal with that issue, but I empathize with all who have to undertake this monster of task. While housing is still difficult to find the management here takes the housing issue quite seriously and has firm plans to increase both the housing reimbursement level and to improve the level of support that they can offer in finding adequate housing in a reasonable amount of time.

However, if you know anything about the real estate market in A.D. this is a difficult task for anyone (private enterprise or public) due to the high occupancy rate (100%) and the quick turn around on empty places (most vacant apartments are rented out within one or two days on the market). A long established institution with high turnover rates can make things easier because they have a battery of apartments that they hold onto as people leave. It's a bit like antique jewelry; you hold onto it in order to pass it one to future generations.

When I first came to this country I was handed a flat that I hated and had no option to move other than quiting. We all longed for the abiltiy to find you own place (and live apart from all of you colleagues). I'm happy that I was given the choice because I know enough about this country to make the most of it. It does come down to priorities.
