Salaries changing "downward".

What was 8,000 in 2001 is now 7,000! Still well above what most unis pay, so they don't have any trouble recruiting. However, this is a 12% drop over 7 years! My salary here in Australia has increased 35% in the same time. No wonder China has trouble attracting professional, qualified teachers. And being on the same salary as some semiliterate drop-in really grates.
In fact, when I started there my take home was equivalent to AUD2000 a month, due to a 4 to 1 exchange rate. In OZ I'd been taking home AUD 3000 a month, but had to pay rent and utilities, unlike China.
Now in OZ my take home is AUD 4,500 a month, whereas at my old Shanghai university it would be the equivalent of AUD 1000, with the exchange rate at 7 to 1! So, no monetary incentives for those from my part of the world. |
