Is it worth getting a CELTA for just one year of teaching?

OK, I just finished up a year in Korea. I've got my degree (not in education) and I want to go somewhere else. I'm looking at Turkey and think it would be an awesome to live for a year or so. I'm thinking about getting a TEFL cert, but everyone says they aren't worth the money. Everyone says CELTA is a lot better, but with the obvious cost and time difference. I'm not going to be an english teacher for life, I just want a break before I go back to school. Can I get a decent job with just a year experience and an online TEFL?

I'm very aware that online study of almost any sort is inferior to in class study. However, it doesn't seem worth it to me to do the extra work and spend the extra money to get a career qualification. I have no delusions about my teaching ability, but my students love me and I care about them and for this short amount of time, I think that should be enough.

Am I wrong? I welcome any constructive advice.

Hi there

There are schools in Turkey which will happily take you without any cert, as long as you have a uni degree, which is a legal requirement in Turkey. You could still get your travel and adventure in.

I hear Bilkent is offering a free CELTA, as long as you work there for a year or so. You would earn, get the cert and travel a bit too.

Or you could go for an online one, which would give you opportunities in other countries too, should you wish to extend your break from school a few years.

Good luck!

Wow, that's nice. What do you think the best way to find a job there is? Do you contact the schools directly or just wait for them to advertise on Daves or the Guardian?

I'm sure this has been touched on, but most of the info I found was several years old, so I don't know if it's still true.
