hello all. am having a grand time in changxing dao. it is an honor to be the first foreign teacher here at the middle school. everyone here is so sweet and kind that it is humbling.
needless to say, the students- all 1500 of them are delights and i want to abet their english learning as best i can in 45 minutes per class per week. there isn't really a whole lot of time. if i spoke with each kid for even one minute i still couldn't speak with everyone.
is there an esl language supply/bookstore in dalian that any one can recommend?
their english level is quite nice. someone out there must have written a book on teaching out in the countryside to huge classes with only 1 class session per week. would hate to re-invent the week when the corpus of prior experience is sitting on a shelf waiting to be accessed. |

The Xinhua Bookstore off of Friendship Square (Youhao Guangchang... BTW a mistranslation into English; youhao means "friendly") had a good selection of teaching books back in '04. I'm sure they still do. They had the Side-by-Side series, which are pretty good. You should buy the teacher's edition and get some good ideas. They also had an annex store on one of the little streets about a block away that had some EFL materials.
Best wishes. |

I will second Loop's recommendation of the Xinhua bookstore downtown. You might also look into the book market (not a single store, but a market with several small shops) in the cellar of the ChangXing market, at the corner of ChangXing Jie and Xi'An Lu, just a bit south of XingGong Jie. It takes a while to get through and to find anything you think might be useful, but if you're patient you're sure to find something useful. |
