|
|
Hi, I have two years experience and a CELTA and have an interview with an International School in Shanghai next week. Job starts in September.
The problem I foresee is that my Sister is getting married at the end of October and I don't really have any choice but to go (haven't seen her for 18 months so I can't snub her).
What are the chances of getting unpaid leave for 2-3 days to fly to the UK and back? Should I mention it at the interview or wait until I've got the job? Would it be better to not mention it and then say there is an "emergency" at home before the time?
Any advice would be much appreciated... |

You will most likely get weekends off so get you sister to get married on the weekend and then you would only have to ask for one day off. I would tell them in advance about the one day as they should be able to work around it.
The best idea but is to give your sister the airfare that you would have to fork out anyway towards the honeymoon and wish the couple eternal happiness over MSN messenger or similar. I'd hate to have to fly to England and back in three days.
Apparently getting a multiple entry visa is harder these days here in China so take that into account also when you are getting your visa for China. |

Yeah I'm not keen on the idea, I'd rather give the money, I don't like weddings but I have to go. So would you mention it at Interview time? |

As I said if it's just for one day I see no problems. If you want more time off I'd keep quite until a week beforehand. There are many chasing positions here with good qualifications for the US and elsewhere currently due to the slowdown in the US economy. You can easily get replaced if the job is a good one.
Also I would avoid saying that the wedding is in Britian as they will think jet lag for a week or more. |
