Anyone familiar with any of the ELS branches in Malaysia?
I'd be particularly keen to know about the salary and the relative difficulty of getting full time (25+ hrs/wk) work there.
I have have a TEFL, BA, and 2 years of EFL experience (including 6 months at an ELS center), and am wondering how I could expect to do there.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers. |

If I'm not too lazy, I can go ask because there is an ELS right near my school. However, I've been here two years and I still haven't met a single foreigner teaching at a language school. They may be interested in hiring you, but you'll be looking at the local market rate. I imagine that you be around RM 2,000. |

Carabao,
Well saint57 is right-you'll be paid at the local rate if you're hired by language centres here. But then again, you could try CFBT or British Council. Uni/ colleges usually look for MA holders with some teaching qual & exp.
As for ELS, a co-worker went for an interview and the offer didn't seem very appealing. You might want to try for yourself though.
BTW, what are your qualifications? and
It would really help if you are a native speaker and are from UK, US, NZ, Aus, Canada - English speaking countries in short.

I went for the generic interview and demo lesson and was offered a job at their KLCC place in 2001. It paid RM2800. The Malaysian Chinese interviewer said it was so unfair that I could get a class to take to me like that just because I was a native speaker, i.e. white. But they werent going to pay me anymore for being white so I passed.
An ex-colleague went to work there in 2003 and was also getting the same old money. I dare say the current pay is RM2800. I think its also fair to say the staff there wont be the creme de la creme. |
