Anyone know of this hostel. It has favourable reviews. Good price at 75 pesos a night.
It's in colonia Del Carmen, Coyoacn. Near Viveros metro.
Would this be a good location to explore areas I might like to check out to live from July?
Im not really concerned about ease of getting to the major attractions. Theres plenty of time for that later and I want to get a feel for the areas and people to gauge where I fancy living.

Coyoacan is down in the south. Do you know where you will be working? I would have to say that living down there can be a pain to get around (I use to live a few metro stops further south), but it is a nice area.
If you are within walking distance of the metro (that line is usually busy, and slow), then you are not too bad off, as the metro system is easy to use. But it will take you a little longer to get more central/north.
Unless you know where you are working, it is hard to know if that is a good/bad spot in terms of scouting out deptos. However, as long as you are near the metro, then you have access to transportation, and can likely get to wherever you will want to go. |

I've never looked for a place to live in lovely Coyoacan, but since it's a desirable part of the city, I imagine that rents would be higher than in other areas. |

I havent a clue where Ill be working yet. I will be job hunting from early aug.
Im stopping for 5 nights in DF before going to spanish school in guanajuato. I will spend those 4 days travelling round on the metro getting off at many different stops and just exploring. I like the idea of being out of the centre so I might just plump for this in order to get to know what being out of the way feels like. |

The central plaza of Coyoacan is torn up for renovation right now, which takes a lot of the fun out of it. There are some cheap neighborhoods walking distance, but I would probably prefer to live more central if my job weren't right here. People commute hours, and the public transport, while pretty efficient and certainly cheap is not very comfortable. Loads of hostels and cheap hotels in the Centro Historico, as well as nightlife and cultural stuff. I think its a good introduction to the city, though I have mixed feelinings about the "new, improved, tourist-friendly Centro" I liked it fine before actually. |

A friend who recently visited Mexico City as a tourist stayed in the same area of Coyoacn and liked it very much. For a permanent base, it depends very much on where you'll be working. Different parts of the city are a many-hours commute apart. |

There are some good jobs down there. I just got a offer at a school for $14,000 pesos per month |

When I took a Spanish course at the UNAM, I lived near metro Copilo, 3 stops further south of Viveros. I thought it was a pretty good area, very tranquilo. Viveros de Coyoacn (a big park) is near the metro, where you can go for a nice walk. There are many used book stores near Miguel ngel de Quevedo, if you are studying Spanish, you could find some good materials there for very cheap prices. The centre of Coyoacn (Plaza Hidalgo) is where a lot of local people go to hang out, and there's a lot to do around there. In general, not a bad location at all, but like some have already pointed out, it's a little far from the city centre and the metro (I think it's line 2? can't remember anymore..) is almost always packed and slow. |
