I got a part time job offer at a language school, and I was told they don't allow their teachers to work at other language school. Competition, I take it.

Is this normal/legal? Thanks.

It sounds illegal and also rather nasty. Ask them how they expect you to live on a part-time salary if they don't want you to work anywhere else. Maybe your landlord will let you pay part-time rent!

Berlitz have this policy. They justify it by asking you why the students could have you in Berlitz and you in another school at half the price - which is fair enough I guess as long as they pay you enough for your exclusivity.

It's not a problem to have more than one school on your FM3. The paperwork is a pain though.

Several teachers at my school also work elsewhere-there's no rule against it and the school can't give everybody enough hours to live on. The problem is that these people aren't as flexible about taking on extra hours at odd times, which means a bit of a burden on those of us that work only here. On the other hand, we get more hours and consideration when it comes to handing out new hours.

Question for the OP - is this school willing to get you the FM3 you'll need to work legally?

Although not strictly legal, as long as you have the authorization to work in Mexico through the sponsorship of one institution, and as long as the other employer is willing to go along with it, it's usually better to let it be. When you have to do your prorroga or refrendo, there won't be any problems as you will just need the letter of continuation. The problems could start if for some reason you have to leave your "real" employer.

The school did tell me about extra hours (at 100 pesos an hour), and the opportunity to work full time, to make double, which is only 12,000 pesos a month, for over 50 hours of work a week. Even the director of the school, a lovely man, laughed when I asked them if they were slave drivers.

For some ungodly reason, it was I who posed the question regarding working for another school. I certainly don't want to work behind anyones back, but MO is right; I have to pay my rent. In all my conversations with the school, I can't remember what they spoke to me about a working visa.

Personally, do I really need one?

Schools like this one really get my goat! Do you realize that if you worked full-time at this place (and I can't even begin to imagine how anyone can teach 50 hours a week and do even a half-assed job), you'd be making just 60 pesos an hour?

I wouldn't consider working for a school that did not give me enough hours to live on and then prohibit me for working the extra hours I needed somewhere else. They have no consideration of their teachers at all and probably will not pay you on time or bounce their checks. There is a school in Tuxtla Gutierrez that does all three. Don't give them bragging rights that they have native speakers and let them treat you like this.

Even then, 60 is better than some other outfits. However, this one sounds like one to turn down.

Good point, and one I've heard from time to time. Also why the independent FM3 is a better route to go if you're going to work at more than one location.

The director is a lovely man? What does that mean? I hope it was sarcastic... 'cause this sounds a little strange: start part-time, can't work for anyone else and maybe we're pay you a living wage if you work a ton of hours. If you start the paperwork for a FM-3 they got you. It takes two months or more to get your FM-3 and in the meantime the INM has all your papers and your passport. I would prefer to work somewhere for a little while and see if it's a good match before I go and do the tramite for the work visa. If you stay on a FM-T you can always hop on a bus and go somewhere else and not have any headaches doing so.

BTW where is this school?

Prog. Gringo, I prefer to keep the school anonymous for now, but know, they are all over the globe.
Interesting what you say about them "having me" if they start the visa process. I admit, I am ignorant on the matter of the visas. I don't plan on staying in Mexico, for more than a year. I figure a visa is more of a "tying me down" kind of thing. And yes, I will have them, when I land next week, but of course will be looking for other avenues of income. I do have to take care of myself.
