I'll be moving to Spain for next September, from UK. I'm wondering how other people have managed to bring their stuff with them - I want to take quite a few things, including guitars, which will be too heavy/fragile to get on the plane. Does anyone know if it's possible to take a coach from England (where you can get more of your things on), or train, or cheapest alternative? Has anyone shipped anything over? How easy/expensive is that?
Thanks for any advice. |

Last year I had about 60 kilos of stuff in storage in Dorset and when I asked the firm for a price to ship it to Spain, they said at least four hundred quid.
Of course, you can travel to Spain from England by train or coach but with loads of luggage it's going to be a nightmare. The low-cost airlines will sell you a cheap ticket and then charge you an arm and a leg for your stuff. It depends how you are for cash. If money is no problem, ship it. |

I just took the ferry from Santander to Plymouth earlier this month. It was a pleasant trip - pity about all the Brits on board, but what can you expect? It makes you appreciate Spaniards all the more.
You can take all you can carry. The rest of the stuff you think you need, either you don't or you can get better stuff in Spain. |

Well, I did the Santander- Plymouth round trip last June. It was expensive but pleasant. Ship full of mainly British, Spanish and some French. Fortunately, there were no Americans. Imagine sharing a ship with MDK for 28 hours?

I'm sure the Brits on board hardly noticed my presence. They mostly got sloshed as soon as they could.
I got the impression that as soon as the ferry pulled away from the dock they all sort of let out a collective sigh of relief and thought, "Whew! Now we can start acting like normal Brits!" I had been in Spain for the past three months and had forgotten that human beings can act that way. I had gotten used to Spaniards, you see. In fact, I had just come from Galicia and was reading about what the Brits had done there during the retreat to Coruna. Put a red coat on some of those ferry passengers, and I could have definitely seen how it all happened.
If anybody else reads this and decides to take the ferry to Plymouth. Take my advice. Lay low on the ferry and when you get to Plymouth hang out at the library until your train leaves. Don't spend any more time in England than you absotively have to.
Everybody at the library was sober, so I know they do have some sober people somewhere there.
Hmmm, You called me a "Wanker" Is that some type of British endearment? I noticed they were all calling each other that on the ferry. So I guess it must be. It certainly is a remarkable country what with the surveillance cameras and the signs saying you can't go into a shop with the hood up on your sweatshirt and the desk clerks warning you not to go walking down town after dark.
So tell me you old "wanker" you. How come so many Brits want to live in Spain? |

Such facile comparisons and tirades about nationalities are pointless, and bound to result in censorship. If you want to make a point MDK, please do it more soberly. You'll get your country a bad name. |

You are quite correct. I logged back on to strike those remarks, but let them stand. I was angry at the man's gratuitous insult.
A ferry ticket from Santander to Plymouth costs 58 euros. Since this person tells us he finds that expensive, it is pointless to take offense at his insult. I retract my remarks, therefore.
The fact remains that the ferry was full of Brits with 28 hours free access to liquor. Had I known that in advance (given my prior experiences of British good manners) I would have gladly have spent another 100 euros or so to get a cabin berth with a good lock on it. Events that occurred on board subsequently proved that would have been a prudent course. I am only grateful that I was not personally involved. It was bad enough watching (and listening).
But that is just me. Others might find such a trip good clean fun. If so, I recommend they try a Saturday night in Gallup, New Mexico. |

MDK seems to think he can insult whoever he wishes but is offended when the insult is thrown back at him. Bear in mind that the OP appears to be British.
You obviously know little or nothing about Spain. In the provincial city where I live residents of the town centre move out at the weekend because they find it impossible to sleep. Noise from bars, glasses being smashed in the street and drunken youths vomiting and urinating in public.
The Brits are not the only ones who misbehave. You and your fellow Americans conduct themselves impeccably at all times, I suppose?
Finally, your comments about prices on the ferry are misleading. I paid 800 euros return (with a vehicle). If the OP decides to bring his belongings that way, then he should be prepared to pay a lot.
BTW ''w*****'' isn't an appropriate word for a public from. I'll delete it. |

What I think is that it is very poor manners to put a lot of nonsense like this in a public thread. We should restrict our remarks to how best to get someone's things into Spain.
To sum up my points. The ferry is a good way, but you should consider a cabin berth because the people on the ferry are often intoxicated and obnoxious - and sometimes assaultive.
As to your slurs and insults, why don't you reach over and hit that little old PM button and send me your silly rant in private so that we don't clutter up the thread with a lot of juvenile nonsense?
That's the American way. Now you show me the British way.
Yes, I think it is a good idea to delete that word. It is a pity you used it in the first place. I would that hope as an English teacher that you have sufficient command of the language to insult people without it. Send me that PM and I will be happy to give you a memorable lesson little big man.

| Slurs and insults? I used one unsuitable word, recognised my error and deleted it. Rant? Who's ranting? |

From mdk's original post on this thread: It was a pleasant trip - pity about all the Brits on board, but what can you expect? It makes you appreciate Spaniards all the more.
C'mon, man. You opened game by throwing off on Brits (to which race the OP to whom you are ostensibly offering helpful information belongs, by the way). |

It was what it was.
I have excellent reasons not to wish to associate with British people. The fact that I alluded to this does not justify a disgusting insult.
The OP is a Brit. ( He himself has said it, and it's greatly to his credit) so he would know what he is getting into if he gets on a ferry with a bunch of his countrymen.
However, someone (like myself) who has only ridden on Ferries with French, Italian, Russian, Albanian, Serbian, and Finnish people might innocently not realize just what implications lie in boarding a ferry full of Brits. I mentioned it only in the name of suffering humanity and not as an insult to the people of Britain.
In my opinion it is poorly advised to pet Grizzly bears, tease cape buffalos, or remain in the vicinity of Brits who have their hands on alcoholic beverages.
MOD EDIT: If and when this thread is unlocked, anyone making an inappropriate, insulting or off-topic comment will be banned. |
