My wife has a B.S. in nursing and a TESOL cert. she has tutored in Korea before. Will she be able to teach in the Middle East I know to expect a lower salary rate than a native speakerI am just looking for part-time work for her. Under the table is okay if it is not viewed as an overly serious violation.

Regards

Your wife could certainly offer tutoring from home and advertise through various websites such as expatriate.com how ever a word of caution: not all students are just interested in just learning English...so you may need to screen the applicants for tutoring or your wife only teach female students.

Bahrain is cracking down on spouses working illegally. My friend said that they've had inspectors making surprise checks in their offices and in other such establishments.
This is the result, I guess, of the expiry of a long amnesty that the Bahraini govt. had granted, after which the LMRA has supposedly put in place new regulations.
Anything that's illegal is not okay, even if you may have been told otherwise, by others. After all, they have nothing to lose. If she's caught, it may jeopardise your employment, too. Further, certain nationalities are more likely to be affected. Also, authorities all over the world would like to show some statistics on their books, immediately after new regulations are put in place.

You didn't mention which country or city you will be in, but she may be able to pick up part-time nursing. Some places also have a Filipino school where she many be able to pick up something. Home tutoring is fine, but as cmp45 says... take care...

Salaries for Filipina nurses are VERY low in KSA and other GCC states.

Ditto for Filipina teachers !

Be aware that most Gulfies associate Philipinos/as with menial labour. This means that they would have a hard time getting their heads around the idea of a Philipina teacher, however well-qualified and fluent in English she may be. Certainly, many Philipino waiters and cleaners speak better English than certain 'teachers' I have met, but that's another story.

We have not picked yet. I have good basic qualifications, but only basic (B.S., TESOL cert., 4 years exp.). The plan is to find a decent job (we both have lowered salary expectations), if we both like the Middle East then I will go for my M.A. and come back after I finish.

The number of years I have as a goal to work in ESL is limited...so a M.A. only makes sense if I would enjoy the "payoff" of working in the Middle East.

The wife has caught the teaching bug and would really like to teach wherever we go.

Regards, and thanks for the replies!

Your wife's problem is the lack of qualifications. There are Philipino teachers of English in colleges and universities in Saudi, but they have MAs or PhDs and years of tertiary experience.

she could get 10kd a day in kuwaiti nursery schools - maybe
i have known a phil woman and man who successfully teach in kuwait - both have qualifications that far exceed your wife's
her best bet is a teaching aide at a private school (about 300kd a month and work her way up) but she'd get that or more being a school nurse - make sure qualifications are up to date and registered in the country where you want to live
