Since I am from the country side and most people just put their dogs in the garage or outside, what do you call the place that watches animals just for the day while you go to work? I know that a kennel is a place to take your dog for longer periods of stay but what is the place called you leave your dog for a day? It is too posh for my upbringing!

According to this site it is called animal daycare?

We got doggy daycare facilities in Canada, too. It's an international phenomenon...

Well they may have one in my hometown but I have not lived their for 10 years. Most people in my hometown would laugh if you told them you took your dog to doggy daycare.

I always thought that the whole point of a dog was that it watched the place while you went to work.

Well, when you've got a new puppy (and an old dog who's not fond of roughhousing as puppies usually are) and you both work, Doggy Daycare is a blessing, believe me.
Regarding the dog watching the house, I doubt too many burglars would be deterred by a year-old Lhasa Apso puppy (who might, however, lick them to death) and an decrepit, Lord know how old (he came from a shelter) Chihuahua/terrier mix who has trouble toddling off to "walkies" in the morning.
Which brings to mind an exchange I had one morn with a guy who was walking a gigantic German shepherd.

Guy: Now that's a weenie dog. Why didn't you get a real dog?"

Me: Well, the way I see it, there are two kinds of dog owners: the ones who buy dogs to protect them and the ones who buy dogs that they can protect. So, who's the real weenie here?

Regards,
John
