Hashim. Thank you.

You have youthful enthusiasm for your new life in Hail and you are about the only one. I've read dismissive, accusatory and inflammatory remarks from Brasscat, Hail's most prolific poster. I find it very hard to get any real information from his comments which are based on his intention to discredit the place. Whatever. Good luck to him but he never posted info about Hail when I asked him. There's a story about The Fox and the Grapes that comes to mind.

I don't expect Hail to be some wonderful oasis of academia but of the 4 people I met at TESOL-Arabia from UOH, I was taken in. One was a teacher, who like yourself, is not a native English speaker but he sure was friendly. The other two, a Brit and a Yank were charming, a bit older and very friendly, light and jovial. If the staff are anything like them,

then I will consider myself very fortunate. The vice rector was also very much a gentlemen (although I know this all may be smoke and mirrors but my judge of character is pretty darn good, thank you very much.)

For myself, the most rewarding part of work is relationships. So far there is nothing to suggest it will be difficult finding my own little network of a few people to mingle with at the UOH.

I do have one question though. Is the initial flight for direct hires paid for by the university? ..or do we get there on our own steam? I'm holding off on asking the university these questions until I have visa in hand. This is my first uni. job and I want to tread softly as I'm not familiar with the routine or Saudi customs.

Hi
Please donot listen to the negative people. I am asking them why saty in KSA despite you are suffering and describe anything in SA as negative and bad !!
It is just a hypocrasy, there are many teaching jobs in Korea, taiwan and Asia, why stay in SA and complaining ! but the fact that SA is better in saving money, more holidays and the job itself is very easy ! this is the fact that nobody tells but only the negative sides ! why they hide the positive sides !why they stick to their jobs in SA with this great suffering !
Nobody says about good pay, saving and holidays which make people to be stuck !
We have to be impartial, and deliver fair information, but some people are hypocrite and stay in SA because of many advantages.
We have to be fair and impartial not to give wrong or bias information.
Put your trust in God and start your job ASAP, you will regret nothing.

One never knows - everyone comes to a different Saudi Arabia, the one they bring with them.

She/he who would find the gold of the Indies must carry the gold of the Indies with him/her.

It depends on one's background and on who one is.

Regards,
John
P.S. I ended up staying there for a total of 19 years - no regrets.

Dear veiledsentiments,

Well, not even a few, actually. It's more:

Regards,
John

Dear MyTrunkShow,
I'm sure you've already seen this - but just in case:

HCC Faculty
The College is still small in number, but growing steadily as it becomes established and faculty include highly qualified and experienced individuals from all over the world. HCC currently seeks well-qualified, motivated, committed, experienced, flexible and enthusiastic faculty members who can adapt to a new environment.
Working Hours
Faculty within the College work a contractual 40-hour, five-day week. In addition to teaching, time is taken up with class preparation and marking homework, examination preparation and grading, departmental committee meetings, and scheduled office hours when the faculty member is available for consultation with his students
Research
HCC is primarily a teaching institution, but faculty are encouraged to become involved with research wherever possible and research activities are acknowledged in the annual evaluation. In general, all of the research facilities at KFUPM are freely available to faculty at HCC.
General Facilities
Rent-free, furnished, air-conditioned housing is provided for faculty. Married faculty live in two bedroom houses and most single men have one-bedroom apartments. All housing is fully furnished, including bedding, towels, cutlery, crockery and the college provides basic cooking utensils and maintenance.

Hail Community College's, comparatively small, housing complex offers a pleasant, safe environment, where social activities are self-directed by community members.

The Recreation Centre at the housing complex offers facilities which include swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, pool and a library.

Hail Community College currently provides a regular free bus service to Hail for faculty and their dependants on a regular basis, offering both daytime and evening schedules. There is of course a free bus service for faculty into work and back to the housing complex. Nevertheless, given the distances involved in going anywhere off campus (downtown Hail is about 10 km away), many faculty members feel it is desirable to have the freedom provided by owning a car.
Financial and other benefits
The rewards of the two-year contract at HCC are plentiful: the experience of a new environment; travel opportunities; free accommodation and utilities; no local taxes and free yearly transportation for the faculty member and his family back to their point of origin. Salary cheques also include a monthly local transportation allowance and the only essential items to buy are food and clothing and therefore a significant proportion of one's monthly salary cheque can be saved.

Faculty may be provided with an opportunity to earn additional income by teaching during the evening and also during the Summer Session. In addition, an end-of-service gratuity is paid to all faculty members who have successfully completed their contract with the college.
Vacations
Faculty are entitled to sixty days' paid summer vacation a year. In addition, there are usually around four to six weeks of holidays during the academic year. During these holiday breaks, faculty are free to travel both within and outside the Kingdom.

Thanx John.

At this point, I might have read every avenue on the web to find info about Hail. Blogs, links, searches and sites have pretty much been exhausted.

If anyone is interested, there is extensive insight on the same website under

http://www.uoh.edu.sa/visi_info.htm

Alternatively, if that doesn't work, go to www.uoh.edu.sa and follow:

>>>About HCC
>>>Visitor Information

I've been monitoring UoH's new website that was launched in the last few days. It's short on information still and probably for the next while.

Hi
I donot mean that Hail is a paradise but there are some advantages with the (direct hire) teachers.
Otherwise, teachers came through the company ( M.Trading ) or ( Tulbah ) are suffering, e.g today iz May 11th and still waiting for the last month's salary !! always delayed! Frequently and regularly !!
even the rector promises not to happen again, but happens frequently !
Avoid ( M.Trading or Tulbah ) and sign the contract directly with the university, then you will get better conditions.
Go to ( seriousteachers.com ), you will find ( M.Trading ) needs teachers again !! but please warn anybody interetested in Hail about this company and he/she has to avoid and ignore it completely.Torture !!

Yes, there are a few on this board who think along the same lines.

From http://www.uoh.edu.sa/web/administration/rector_message.htm

Quote:
Rector's Message: The University of Hail (UOH) is an innovative institution, where everything is moving at the speed of change

From http://www.uoh.edu.sa/emp_dept.htm

Quote:
Applications are invited for Faculty positions at Hail Community College starting in September 2005 or January 2006.

And on many other pages on their website they still refer to themselves as "Hail Community College" even though it stopped being that and became "University of Hail" around January 2006. And they are inviting applications for September 2005? Well, we know now how long ago they updated some pages of their website, inconsequential pages such as the employment page Rolling Eyes

You might say I am being petty, but that says a lot about the place there. "Speed of change"? Well I guess they are talking about a snail. Or maybe this shows a trend of lies and deceits?

Consider this, from http://www.uoh.edu.sa/fac_guid.htm :

Quote:
At Hail Community College, you will have the opportunity not only to have daily contact with some of the brightest and most capable students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, [...]

Perhaps the biggest lie ever told in human history? As far as I know.

And it continues:

Quote:
[...] you will also encounter a most hospitable and friendly working and social environment.

Not as big a lie as the previous one, but still pretty bad, especially about the working environment. [unless you are a brown-noser, which someone here seems to be]

Perhaps I will post more later.

Yes, but that is all pretty much the standard rant of every university in the Gulf. You don't expect them to be honest about this sort of thing do you? They can't say "our students will be mediocre, a bit lazy, tend to plagiarize and copy their friends' exams, but some of them will stay awake in class most days."

Funny how they haven't updated the employment pages or anything else it seems. I guess their only person who had the password to get into the website left. Laughing
