I want to clarify that if someone has a choice between going to Japan with a tourist visa and looking for work, and going with a WHV and looking for work - take the WHV option!
I don't care if people look for work on a tourist visa. But what I want to point out is that it's not perfectly okay to do this, so you have to be a bit sneaky about your intentions when going through immigration. Okay forget the suit, but Paul, having a resume in your luggage is grounds for deportation. If you say it is for Korea, you'd better be able to produce a ticket to Korea and a working visa then and there. If you are unlucky enough to catch the attention of the inspecting officer then it is up their own judgement as to whether they should send you on the next flight home. Be smart, be prepared, have a story ready. I don't know of deportation examples relating to Japan, but I do know 1 person refused entry to England, 1 person refused entry to Australia, and another who was detained for 2 hours upon arrival in Australia.
Everybody else has already said other things that I wanted to say so I'll leave it at that. |

You also say you have no facts for Japan. I find this really hard to believe, April. Can anyone else verify this?
In any case, what is a "resume" - bring it on a floppy or a CD, on the harddrive of your laptop. Mail it to the hotel you are staying at for the first couple of days. Post Restante. Have someone mail it to you after you get here - fax it you. Tattoo it on your buttocks. Whatever. There are so many ways round this that it is untrue.
Anyway, immigration officials do not go through your luggage. Customs do. Customs may go through your bags with a fine tooth comb. They may find a resume. SUre, they can give you hassle, but nowhere on earth have I ever read that it is illegal to bring in a resume - even if you are on holiday.
I've travelled very very extensively by plane and never had a customs official look through any documents I've been carrying in any country I've been to.
Maybe my green face puts them off
April, I may be so totally wrong that I will be eating humble pie long after I leave Japan. But, I'd like to know that this situation is really bonafide as it directly affects the OP and many others who come here with resumes.
... not to mention handguns. |

I think my point has been lost amongst suits and pieces of paper. So here it is again - if a person has an option of going to Japan and looking for work with either a tourist visa or a WHV, take the latter.
I would hope that common sense would tell someone not to pack a hardcopy of their resume in their suitcase. Use software or e-mail it. Or whatever. That is what I meant by be sneaky.
If I debate my argument again, I'll be rehashing what I have already said and probably only entertaining myself.
Shmooj, I know that you don't believe me. That's okay. Anyone else reading this can also take that option. But for god's sake - USE A WHV IF YOU HAVE THAT CHOICE!!!!! At least adhere to that. |

THis is a forum read by many who are entering Japan for the first time. What you posted didn't sound like an option at all but a legal contravention. Seems that it is just advice and so IMO best stated as such.

I don't think there is anyone here who disagreed with that at all. Certainly not me. We hear you loud and clear on this point. I was talking about the other issue i.e. the quote above this one.
We agree, we agree |
