Hai Everybody
I have completed my MPhil in English Literature from Newcastle UK and got my CELTA from International House UK . Both my MA and BA are in English Literature and am desperate for a job in Dubai. My problem is that I dont have a TESOL qualification except for the CELTA and I think this is hampering my job prospects (or do you think so?). Do you think I should rather do an MA in TESOL (for which I have been accepted to Leicester ) and then look for a job or can carry on sending CVs, doing interviews and keeping my fingers crossed? I have 5 years experience teaching literature and 1 year experience as TESOL assistant in UK. My family is in Dubai, so I have a roof over my head and all expenses met.  |

| Skip the MA and go straight for a PhD in ESL. Find an English department. Avoid colleges of education like the plague. |

And Language Centres in universities. They aren't seen as part of the university; the teachers (instructors!) aren't seen as real university teachers; they're run more like an American junior high school--- with the behaviour and attitudes concommitant with infantilization. And I'm not talking about the students. Bound-for-Saudi is right: go for an English Department in a university: there might be some chance that the rot hasn't set in there yet. Although, from my own observations, it alrady has in some. |

| Thank you for your replies; but as boundforsaudi says is it possible to go directly into PhD in ESL without having an MA in the same? Has Literature got anything in similar with ESL, well I did do some linguistics as a paper in my MA. And can anyone tell me what kind of computer technology you use in Teaching of English? I recently had an interview for Instructor in English post and was simply dumb at this question. Literature students dont really use any computers in their work other than to search for materials. Please enlighten as I can be better prepared next time. |

Generally speaking, software computer programs vary for language labs.
They are basically used to supplement/ compliment classroom work. Teachers usually act as facilitators in a language lab as opposed to actually teaching. This may also depend upon the institution and level of students.
Others may have more specific info regarding the software programs used in ESL language labs or you could try a search on the internet.
However, computers are also used in the classroom as a means to to teach the lesson. The teacher's Computer is conected to audio visual equipment to project the info from the textbook, etc on to a screen or even the internet. Computers in the classroom could also be linked to 'smartboard' technology as well.
This is what i assume you are asking about....  |
