Is there a thriving market for used mobile phone in Imdramayu?
|
Behind the Rupiah, handphones are Indonesia's second form of currency. There's a huge market throughout the country for used handphones.
You just have to go with your gut instinct as to whether you think she's serious in wanting to return.
Just tell her;
Nanti beli kartu sim yang baru. Kalo udah, telpon ke saya
Later, buy a new sim card. When you've done that, call me

I don't know about in Indramayu, but unless the phone was a P-900 or a model with similar specifications, it would probably fetch US$10 at the most in Jakarta. Mind you, that may not exactly be considered chump change in provincial West Java.
This has certainly been a rollercoaster ride of a thread. |

they want to be able to call u with various excuses for needing money......... my younger brother needs money for school, my parent is sick and needs medicine, etc. |
What a coincidence! I just got a combination of these two "My younger brother is sick and needs medicine" from a friend last week!

Most Indonesians that have neither a fixed landline or handphone, use a local wartel to make calls. That is, a store with telephone's to make outgoing calls only. |
Though I've got Wartel a few times when calling back after a missed call...I don't suppose they'd like people receiving calls much though.

Will a mobile phone purchased in Doha work in Imdramayu (or anywhere in Indonesia)? Is it easy to buy a SIM card? |
When I arrived in Doha, my phone had a Simpati card in it, and it automatically linked up to Qtel roaming. I guess the opposite is true. |

Has anyone suceessfully used a Q-Tel SIM card in Indonesia? I wonder if it will work. Can't hurt trying. I hope it has the same number.
I think she is serious b/c we are kind to her, our house is small, we pay her regularly, and our one child (a daughter) has a good personality so she doesn't cause her trouble.
Now, when the housemaid makes a mistake (like washing light and dark clothes together and give the white shirt a red colour, OR don't follow my wife's recipes), then my wife shouts at her. I can't because I'm a man and she might fee uneasy.
She can watch TV anytime she wants (when we're not watching or she's working). She's a homebody and says she likes to stay home...has no friends in Qatar so she basically hangs out at home. She likes to go out shopping with us so we take her along sometimes. |

not exactly, when i went to Hongkong and Singapore, and bought their local card, i asked whether I can use their local card in Indonesia. Both countries said NO, and when I asked why, they said because none of the indonesian local card providers are willing to cooperate with them.
So out of curiousity, I asked Telkomsel and Indosat in Surabaya, and both said the reason they don sign any agreement with SIM card from other country is because they are afraid of the competition (the same reason why its so hard for a foreigner to get KITAS). And for the same reason they make themselves available to be use outside Indonesia, so that people will pay the roaming cost.
My suggestion is to call the Doha provider and asked whether their card can be use in Indonesia or not. |
