Monterrey is generally not attractive to foreigners because of the weather (it's either ferociously hot or unbearably cold), it's far from any beach, and there are no ruins here.

With the exception of the weather, I happen to like the city. Good museums, friendly people.

Speaking of traffic in Guadalajara, is it necessary to have a car there?

I am planning on attending a course there in July and possibly staying there to teach if I find it agreeable. However, it seems that DF is the choice on this thread and it's making me question my destination.

I guess it depends on how much travelling you want to do Wink

In my time there, I never found not having a car a problem. The bus network is quite extensive, but they can be quite uncomfortable, and that's if you can get a seat. Also, you quite often have to get two buses to where you want to go, or a combination of metro/bus, and at 5 pesos each trip, your transport costs can soon add up.

As I said, this never bothered me, but it might others. I would say do your course in Guadalajara, see how you find living in the city, and make your decision after a few weeks.

Don't be unduly influenced by what people say here on the relative merits of living in Mexico City or Guadalajara. What matters is how you feel about the latter after living there for a bit. Then you'll be able to make at least a semi-informed decision.

One of my roomates took off about a month ago and left a bicycle here. Now it's mine.

I'm having lots of fun on it, and I'm finding out that I can get around the entire city pretty quickly.

The traffic does tend to make my life flash before my eyes daily, but I'm getting used to it.
