A colleague of mine has just experienced this.Although he has his residence in the UK, he works in Saudi Arabia.
He was required to pay 30 pounds to see his GP.

Canadians abroad also need to pay for their own healthcare. But I believe there's a 1 year 'grace period' if you will, that a provincial health plan will work abroad. There's a 3 month wait upon re-entry to Canada before such a plan resumes.
Travel insurance is a great option for the 1-year teacher, if the home plan is still active. Most resident plans don't cover things like emergency air evacuation for expats. So travel insurance is a great add-on and it's cheap - around a dollar a day.
But this insurance doesn't work if there's no home plan. Expat health insurance is the plan in this case. There's a good market for this insurance, and reasonable in most countries. Not surprisingly, costs are most expensive for the USA.

Canadian medicare allows ONLY 180 consecutive days outside the country to expire. That being said, I know of at least one Canadian who lived in Florida and occasionally visited home for medical treatment. He MUST have been paying Canadian income tax.
You're right about the three month period but it is three months residence in a province. You can't just wander around without an official residence. |

So what health insurance do you Canadians recommend to a fellow Canadian going to South China for 1 year? |
