Hey all,
Am finally grounded after a couple of months back in Hanoi (this is round 2 for me here), and wanna put the feelers out there for any SPECIFIC questions about Hanoi re teaching, housing, etc.

Feel free to PM or email me, or post a q on here.

Smile

Hey there! Thanks for your help in advance. I have a few questions for you...

We are a couple looking for a one or two bedroom apartment in Hanoi. We will be there in between July and August. We don't need anything fancy, but we'd like a balcony. My boyfriend's getting a CELTA in HCMC and I'm relying on my English/Psychology degree and 2 years of experience in Korea.

What is your opinion on the best neighborhoods (we don't know where we'll be working) close to downtown (we don't know where we'll be working)?

What can we expect to pay per month?

Do you recommend a certain type of school (private, international) or a certain school in particular?

How safe and easy is it take on private lessons?

Do you have any idea about the dental services there? (weird question, i know!)

Sorry if this is overwhelming! I'm leaving for HCMC in 10 days and I'm very excited!

Thank you!

Are you going to HCMC for his CELTA, then up to Hanoi to live/work for a while? If so, see the below info for Hanoi. Good luck, Steph

What is your opinion on the best neighborhoods (we don't know where we'll be working) close to downtown (we don't know where we'll be working)? THERE ISNT SO MUCH A DOWNTOWN AREA IN HANOI AS THERE IS THE OLD QUARTER AND OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS. APARTMENTS/HOUSES AND BUSINESSES ARE SPREAD ALL AROUND THE CITY, WITH NO REAL BUSINESS DISTRICT OR DOWNTOWNY AREA. SOME PLACES I HAVE WANTED TO LIVE IN OR HAVE LIVED IN AND LIKED ARE IN/NEAR TRUC BAC LAKE AND ON THE EDGE OF THE OLD QUARTER (RIGHT OFF HAI BA TRUNG STREET). THERE ARE MANY AREAS APART FROM THESE THAT ARE GREAT TO LIVE IN ALSO, IT IS A MATTER OF WHAT YOU WANT AROUND YOU AND HOW CLOSE TO WORK YOU WANT TO BE (OR NOT BE). THE BEST THING TO DO IS FIND HOUSING AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A BIT, THAT WAY YOU ARE NOT STUCK IN A PART OF TOWN YOU DONT LIKE WITH A SIGNED HOUSING CONTRACT UNDER YOUR BELT.

What can we expect to pay per month?
APARTMENTS ARE $200 usd+ PER MONTH PLUS UTILITIES AND HOUSES START AT AROUND $500 usd PER MONTH. pRICES HAVE GONE UP A LOT OVER THE PAST YEAR, SO THIS MAY BE A BIT OFF, BUT NOT MUCH. THE SIZE DIFF BETWEEN APARTMENTS AND HOUSES IS MASSIVE, APARTMENTS BEING SUPER SMALL AND HOUSESE BEING ABSOLUTELY HUGE. PRICES ALSO RANGE IN PRICE ON AREA (eX; THE WESTLAKE AREA, IN GENERAL,IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE OLD QUARTER). uTILITIES ARE RARELY INCLUDED AND ARE USUALLY GAS, CABLE TV, DSL, AND MAYBE WATER.

Do you recommend a certain type of school (private, international) or a certain school in particular? YIKES. DEPENDS ON WHAT/WHO YOU WANT TO TEACH, HOW LONG YOU WANT TO BE HERE, ETC. KINDA WHY I NOTED THAT I CAN TRY AND HELP ANSWER SPECIFIC QUESTIONS, CAUSE Q'S LIKE THIS COVER SUCH A VAST AREA AND I MAY NOT ANSWER THE QUESTION YOU ARE WANTING TO ASK. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU ARE CONSIDERING AND I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT I HAVE HEARD ABOUT A PLACE, NO PROB.

How safe and easy is it take on private lessons?
SAFE? THEY ARE EASY TO GET AND PAY REALLY WELL. I AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE (JUST DONT LIKE DOING PRIVATES, PERSONAL PREF) SO CANT REALLY SAY MORE THAN THAT. i DO KNOW THAT IN THE FIRST MONTH I WAS BACK 4 DIFFERENT TIMES I WAS OFFERED A PRIVATE CLASS BY RANDOM FOLKS AT WORK AND ON THE STREET.

Do you have any idea about the dental services there? (weird question, i know!) I KNOW THAT THERE ARE A FEW DENTAL PLACES IN HANOI. I HAVE HAD A CLEANING HERE, BUT NOT MUCH ELSE. I WOULD CHECK OUT http://newhanoian.xemzi.com/ FOR MORE DETAILS ON THIS AND AN IDEA OF HOUSING COSTS. i ALSO HAVE A GREAT ESTATE AGENT THAT I HAVE USED A GAZILLION TIMES (i MOVE A LOT). PM ME AND I WILL TELL YOU HIS CONTACT INFO.

Sorry if this is overwhelming! I'm leaving for HCMC in 10 days and I'm very excited!

NO WORRIES.

Thank you!

Hi Travel Goddess,

You said in your post that you "avoid private teaching like the plague". Is this just your personal choice, or for legal/safety reasons as well?

Thanks.

Cat.

What safety reasons?

I mentioned before that I dont like privates, personal preference reasons. I like the energy and momentum of big classes.
