"LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have discovered the tracks of a herd of 11 long-necked sauropods walking along a coastal mudflat in what is now the Republic of Yemen, the first discovery of dinosaur footprints on the Arabian peninsula."

Now my question - scot47, were you down there, walking your pets?

Regards,
John

My position is that the Earth was created at approximately 2.27 pm on 4th February in the Year 4668 BC. Dinosaurs never existed.

Well, Uncle Scot, it seems you are a young earth creationist (healthy sign of a believer)! Laughing
But, your position is different from the 17th century Anglican clergyman, Dr John Lightfoot, who estimated that creation occurred on 6 am, 23rd October 4004 BCE!!

For many students here in KSA, the existence of dinosaurs is a controversial topic. Many of them doubt (or flat-out don't believe) that dinosaurs ever existed, period -- let alone on the Arabian peninsula. Confused

I was once reprimanded by my training colonel who happened to be observing my class for trying to put across the idea of what a "train" was by mentioning the old Hijaz railway. "You must never mention things that existed before Saudi Arabia became a kingdom".

I failed to mention the existance of the Holy Haram or the Prophet's Mosque to him in my futile defense...and he had the funniest long hair growing out of his face...go figure!

Well, I guess the dinosaurs did come before Saudi Arabia was a kingdom, so I'll never bring them up again! Smile

I would have thought most Saudis know nothing of the Hejaz Railway. More likely to know about thye train service running between Dammam and Riyadh.

Of course, you're right, scot, but the whole arguement was asinine! It was so long ago. In fact, it might have been in reference to Lawrence of Arabia (which probably makes more sense!). I forget. But, again, the colonel's remark was as dumb as Dallas!

I used to go onto the desert around Riyadh, collect lots of marine fossils (actually, I guess I could be called a "Marine fossil" myself), and sometimes show them to the students in class. Then, we'd talk about how the ocean used to cover that area.
I never had any problems - but then, the IPA students tended to be more "open-minded" than those in many other places.

They're planning to restore the Hejaz railway and run the trains again.
