|

Hi,
My wife and I are moving to Chile shortly, (June) we will be self employed when there and living in Santiago. Does anyone know who to contact in order to pay for health insurance?
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
Many thanks!
Philip
(Note: we have contacted our Chilean friends who live near Santiago and they were not sure about this as they thought payment schemes and healthcare provision may be different for foriegners.) |

i have been looking into the same thing...
Specifically I don't have suggestions to answer it, however some comments...
Healthcare is something usually set up with the employer.
However, most normal doctor visits and for minor problems cost little enough that it may be worth paying out of pocket. (I visited a couple specialists and it cost around 20,000 pesos, which will of course vary greatly under circumstances but just an example)
A possibility getting major medical insurance in the country you're from for foreigners living out of the country. (However, at least policies from the US would be difficult to pay living off an ESL teacher's wage in Chile)
hopefully someone else can help better answer your question, it'd help me out as well. much luck |

When I first arrived I paid for health insurance with one of the numerous private "isapres". I found that Masvida was one of the best and cheapest. As long as you have a rut. you can pay for you own health insurance and pension fund if you so choose. You have a number of plans to choose from and you can find a couple of good cheap ones. I also have a friend who has a plan with Fonasa - the govt. medical aid - their plans are generally cheaper and a couple of them even cover the private clinics. If you dont have a rut (Chilean ID number), Im afraid you are going to have to go through an employer. |
