Anybody signing on with Horizon International at either location in Burma/Myanmar? I'm on the verge of going to Mandalay in March. Or feel free to post comments even if you have absolutely no intentions of working there...and yes, I realize the debate over whether or not I'll be supporting the regime more than the locals....but lash out anyway... |

I happen to be in favour of visiting Burma/Myanmar, after having seen and heard the positive responses from the locals during my trek around the country in late 2006.
The number of visitors to the country has dropped significantly since the (ongoing) "crackdown" against pro-democracy types started last September. You will me letting the local people know that they are not forgotten.
You may have seen the few threads on this forum re: teaching there, and, as you know, there are great websites related to travel in the region...my favourite being: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forum.jspa?forumID=24&keywordid=98
I will reiterate the importance of having medical evacuation insurance in a country without any world-class hospitals.
I know that you will be very welcome in Mandalay - bring lots of biros/ball-point pens to give away as small gifts! |

As long as you are open to a new experience, Tom Sawyer...Mandalay is lovely and interesting in its own essence...the people are great...much poverty, but much cutural beauty...Myanmar is in its own time warp...it seems the hotel the school puts you up in is very nice compared to living conditions of the Burmese...
you may p.m. me .... |

Hello Namdak, I have been trying for weeks to get an email response from the contact info on their site. I called their phone numbers many times and finally got contact last week. they said yes they still need teachers. And they took my email and my cell phone number in Laos where i am living and working. They said the head person will call me or contact me???Nothing and now I cant get anyone to answer about 2 - 4 oclock and no one answers the phones and 5 phone numbers they list on the web site. I would like you to contact me as you seem to be working for them. I worked with the burmese for a year supporting the burmese kids orphaned by the tsunami in Thailand. my email, [email protected]
thank you travis lear |
