We are moving to Bahrain in August where my husband has a teaching position. We are going to live in Riffa. I would like to make contact with South Africans in Bahrain. I would also like to know which school would be best for my three year old daughter to attend. My husband will be teaching at an Arabic school and I am two-minded if it would be the best school for my child to attend.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You may already have checked out this website in neighbouring Qatar: http://southafricansinqatar.netfirms.com
Also, you may email Vic at [email protected]. He lives in Dubai and has his website at http://members.tripod.com/vic77. He has offered to help in matters except for job-hunting. He may have some knowledge about SAins in Bahrain.
Try the Sacred Heart School in Isa Town for your child. They have both O and A levels.
One other way of getting in touch with SAians (I'm assuming that you are a white South African) is to visit the British Club in Adliya. They have a website that shows up on Google.
Lastly, (and this is a long shot), chat up the airhostesseses/stewards during the long haul from SA to Bahrain. Some of them might put you in contact with South Africans in Bahrain. |

Brit Club could theoretically be for anyone - even you Scot47 now many people who weren't British and a few who weren't even white that were members.
There's a membership commitee and don't know all the ins and outs but as long as you're relatively normal (maybe not Scott then) you might be lucky.
Of course - if you fail to get in there there's always the others - Dilmun, etc. |

What is the old saying? I wouldn't join a club that would accept someone like me.
Was it Groucho Marx?

Come on, Uncle Scot, do you still living (in your mind) in the period of 50s and 60s?
The British Club in bahrain is open to anyone, regardless of his nose color, skin color, eyes color, ethnicity, etc, etc, etc!!! Just check their web site and you will see in their photo gallery that they even have one non white folk in their executive committee!
http://www.britishclubbahrain.com/photo.htm
This is what they say in their web site:
"The Membership of the Club is available for UK Citizens, GCC Nationals and other Nationals who do not have their own Clubs in Bahrain. The percentages of each of the categories are controlled in agreement with the Ministry for Social Development. "
Uncle Scot, wake up, and ask GOD for forgiveness before it is too late! |

Dear scot47,
Perhaps we could talk Dave into putting an "irony meter" up between the choices for "Font color" and "Font size" since being oblivious to irony seems not at all uncommon.
The meter could have a sliding scale, say, from 1 to 10, and the poster could choose the setting. Then, perhaps we could have the postings color-coded, so that a 0 or 1 on the irony scale would produce a blue text, whereas a 9 or 10 would result in a red text - rather like the "terror alert" system.
Of course, I'm being ironic about all this.

Tons, I've tried calling up the number of the SA embassy found on googling for the same. No luck.
I've prefixed the six-digit number with 17. No luck.
Tried looking up the phone directory. No luck.
Called up local enquiry. No luck.
Sorry that I can't be of further help.
PS: I'm leaving for Cairo on the 29th. Hence, may not be here for further assistance.
Best of luck, though. |
