After working as an English teacher in Indonesia for 3 years without a problem and with great references, I joined Direct English in Surabaya. I should have seen the signs before joining, the main one being it is run by businessmen, with no experience in the education field. I intended to stay 2 years, but spent 1 very long year working for them. For most of my time there, there was no leadership. Sometimes we had a second rate Director of Studies, but mostly we were on our own, which can be good, but there is absolutely no one there to make sure resources and teaching methods are improved. Most of the resources i used there for teaching were my own. Salaries were often paid up to 2 weeks late. We are made to work in both branches on the same day, which are at opposite ends of the city, with no travel expenses. I did not receive any part of my bonus after completing a year of working there. Teachers are brought in being promised a 1 year Kitas visa, only to discover that they have a 6 month business visa, which you are not officially allowed to work on. Anyway the list is endless. I'm just saying stay away from this school. It's a joke. |

Stories like this one make me so angry.
Sadly it is small things that build up and up until you as a worker feel isolated and start to question your loyalty to te company.
It even feels so petty getting worked up about small things going wrong. But when these snowball te problems really take on a new level of impotence.
I have a story of my own but more on that in the week to follow.
The question is when one finds themself in a situation like this do you just put up and shut up and be miserable, plodding on or resign maybe having to pay back costs to the company and loose money |

I saw 2 lawyers and seriously thought about taking action and would have done, if I was a permanent resident in this country. I decided instead to run away on their visa, I still had 4 months of visa time, after my contract period was up, so instead of going to immigration with them to get my Exit permit, I went to Bali for 4 months on their visa, before returning to Surabaya to get my exit permit. I live in Bali now, not teaching anymore, this school put me off teaching for schools. Working for myself now. |

I was offered a job with DE in Surabaya when they first opened. I met the people running it and knew they were a bunch of nit wits. Pay was average, couldn't arrange suitable accommodation, wanted to use EF as a model for success, couldn't organise a visa.

I went for a job in DE Kelapa Gading and two girls interviewed me. They were extremely arrogant and rude. One was Muslim and the other Chinese. Very unprofessional outfit I thought. The mob in Sudirman seemed much better organised but don't always hire staff.
Wouldn't rate them at all. |

hehehe both scored points in each category.
The other thing is Kelapa Gading at the time didn't have a busway line nearby so had a 120,000 rp round trip in a taxi through heavy traffic. And that's the thanks I got for my effort. |

"Sorry darling, but I am so stressed at school. I have to teach an 'advanced' course."
"It's ok dear, it is more common than you think."
