Hello all,

This is my first post, so please allow me to introduce myself... My name's Elizabeth and I'm preparing to begin my TEFL training followed closely (hopefully) by my new career.

Now that we've become aquainted, here's my story:

I've enrolled in the ITTO training course in Guadalajara, Mexico, and want to start teaching pretty much anywhere that will allow me to make payments toward my student loans and save enough to go home once a year, as well as permitting me to travel within my chosen country once a year or so. My research has lead me to desire a position in South Korea. Unfortunatly, I have an irrational fear of X-Rays. From what I've read (on these boards as well as other boards/websites), in Korea, Taiwan, and almost every other Asian country (you know, anywhere that the money is decent), X-rays are par for the course.

So my question is, is there anywhere I can hope to go where I won't require the dreaded x-ray, but will make a decent salary? Or should I immediately start paying for a hypnotist/psychologist/voodoo doctor?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Elizabeth

It seems to me that exams by reputable doctors and/or hospitals require an x-ray in every country. After 23 years teaching in many odd corners of the world, I'm be more afraid of needles and surgerical/dental equipment than x-rays!

See the voodoo guy!

Find a country that doesn't require a medical exam, there are plenty out there.

Get someone else about the same age to have a medical for you using your name. They never ask to see ID here in China.

The x-ray is probably required to screen for tuberculosis. There is a skin test that can be used instead. It is not quite as sensitive as the x-ray, but since the chances of a well-norished American having TB are not very great, most medical authorities can be persuaded to accept it instead of the x-ray.

I would tell them that I have been advised against any unessesary radiation exposure because I have already exceeded my lifetime permissable dosage due to a radiation accident while working as a lab technician.

It seems to me that the posters, tzindaro and Anda, are suggesting fraud?
I still think the voodoo guy would be best or stay home. If I remember correctly, the USA requires only the skin test for TB..................

Thank you for all of your responses. While tzindaro and Anda are remarkably clever, I, unfortunately, am not very sneaky, so I'll probably have to skip those suggestions.

Staying home simply isn't an option, so I really like naturegirl's idea of finding a place that doesn't require a medical exam. Do you have any specific recommendations? If not, does anyone know a good voodoo guy?
