'getting laid and learning to TALK WITH PEOPLE, which is what teaching is....'
And there I was, reading Dewey and Chomsky and Rogers and Richards and Dilthey, trying to find out 'what teaching is'! And all the time, ole Jock-the-Joke in the next bedsit could have enlightened me so much more painlessly!
Lordy, how I wasted my student life! |

MAs and higher actually tend to be much worse teachers. Not socialised adequately and lack any enthusiasm or empathy with learners.
Too much time studying and thinking they're smart while other guys(and girls) are getting laid and learning to TALK WITH PEOPLE, which is what teaching is. |
non chom you could not have been more precise!!
I am a lowly Bsc surrounded by folks with Masters, who is it the students come to with complaints and asking for advice/clarification?? Not the MA's thats for sure!!
It seems that once they have reached this giddy height, reality slips away and they seem to join an elite "club" in which they can look down on lowly Bachelors no matter what discipline, Students? their just fodder helping to pay their inflated salaries.
I think the one word that sums them up is "snobs"

Chon Nom's PM to me was rude, in the least. It also had a reference to the "getting laid" thing which seems to pretty much sum up what's on his mind.
Talk about giving backpackers a bad name! |

You mean advice on problems like run-on sentences, or the difference between "their" and "they're?" You are right, Duffy. You don't need an MA for that. A good grammar school education should do. |

Guys, guys - this is descending into a slanging match - I'm interested in finding out what's happening at Nizwa - the old no degree/batchelors/masters debate should be taken else where.

Mabruk ya duffy!!
But... I agree with sleepwalker that this conversation is getting silly. Ability to teach well and get along with students (and other faculty) have little or nothing to do with which piece of academic paper you have. I've known great, good and lousy at all levels. (there are also snobs at all levels )

All the people in my MEd cohort had been slinging it out in the classroom for years (some k-12 qualified but many ESOL teachers). I did 6 years hard time in craptastic jobs before I finished the masters with the hopes that it would present some better employment opportunities (and it has presented many). I can run a classroom of 35 8-year-olds like a well-oiled machine. I can manage a class of somewhat apathetic and lazy students from around the Gulf like a pro. Having a masters doesn't mean we haven't had to get down and dirty, professionally speaking. Having a masters doesn't mean I've lost the ability to answer grammatical questions. It also doesn't mean that I'm not approachable in the eyes of my students when it comes to advice, complaints, and clarification. It does mean that I have a lot more job opportunities (better pay, better conditions) in the Gulf than someone without that piece of paper.
I suspect this really isn't about superiority of the masters holders but inferiority of those who still haven't done one. |

Eha, research shows that simply having a MA TESOL decreases the chance of one getting l**d. |

Well, may be holding a Master or a PhD give a candidate more job opportunities and high salary scale. But, from the point of view of scientific knowledge and academic experience you might find people who hold only Bachelor with good background in academic/scientific knowledge combined with teaching/research experience are much better than some of those who hold master or PhD in a specific and narrow field.
I know some lecturers in some of UK universities who do not hold Masters or PhD were supervising PhD students (in engineering), which means that these lecturers hold a wide academic/scientific knowledge which allow them to supervise Master or PhD students!
And I guess the same scenario could be found in the world of TEFL/EFL/ESL/ESOL/etc/etc! |
