| Can anyone suggest a good mall to buy small electronic gifts such as digital cameras laptops etc in Dubai? I would like to buy some gifts for my friends before I leave for the summer. Many thanks. |

| Have you tried Carre Four for some of these things? Might be worth a trip to Computer Street for the laptops (nice friend, you are!). Also, what about Jumbo Electronics? |

Blindfold yourself. Have someone spin you around. And stagger off in any direction! Seriously tho, Ibn Battuta Mall has a Jacky's...only if you can find it behind the berm that the Metro has thrown up!

| Our computer technician has advised to never buy a computer from carrefour. I would second that on electronic goods in general. better to try plug ins , radio shack or jacky's. |

The computer you will buy from Carrefour is exactly the same make you will buy elsewhere. Simply check out three or four different places for the same machine.
I would hardly call a laptop a small gift. For digital cameras you would either want to buy an SLR, which is over $1,000 or simply get a camera phone. Stand alone digital cameras are pretty much a dying market. |

Will the price of a Canon or Nikon DSLR be better in Dubai, or should I buy one here in the US before I leave in August?
And while I'm posting in a shopping thread... is there a place to buy real maple syrup in Dubai? Not that high fructose corn syrup laden Aunt Jemima or Mrs. Butterworth junk, but the real deal Canadian or Vermont dark amber maple syrup? If not, I'll have to bring some with me and then have it shipped periodically. |

| I found the DSLRs are comparable in price in Dubai, but you would at least save on tax. |

| I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a couple of q's myself about where to buy a lightweight sleeping bag and a good GorTex...anyone know of a good camping / hiking / outdoors store in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Have searched and searched the internet, but all I come up with is sporting goods stores. Looking for something more like EMS, REI, or Kerrimor. |

| I know there is a place called Jebel Ali or something like that, I believe it is duty free zone. I am not sure about local laws but you should be able to find good stuff there. |
