Yes I received offer in engineering dept. I know salary in much less than New York, but my concern is how is environment, contract renewal, kids school, cost of living, discrimination etc.

thanks

The Engineering College is still new, only Mechanical and Electronic Eng dept are open. Civil, Chemical, and Industrial engineering dept will start in Sept 08 and January 09.
I think you have to put your 'expectation level near zero concerning the quality of education in Taibah uni and kids schooling, especially international schools.
I think you will face some kind of discrimination in public life, especially if you are brown skinned.

Well, it will depend on your heritage!
If your heritage is a Scottish, Irish or Welsh heritage, with red or dark brown hair, and blue eyes, then the discrimination in public life is nil! Laughing

If your skin is pale but not as milky white and your heritage is an Indian, Syrian, Lebanon, or China, and with brown/black eyes, then discrimination in public life is between 10% and 50%!

Is it a race based discrimination or religion? What about green eyed pale skinned muslims -convert or not? Is it for Madina or other cities as well?

I have received an e-mail message that I have been selected for the teaching job. The message has no other details. I have responded with a request to provide me more details. I will share the offer details with the group.

Greetings!

If anybody can give an authoritative response to any of the following questions, it could be useful. An offer was received, but detailed information was, perhaps necessarily, lacking.

1. Which books are in use for the English language courses? Is there an interest among teachers to keep the materials appropriate?

2. Is there a policy regarding copyright that English language teachers must abide by? (We respect and honor it, obtaining permissions for all photocopies. / We don't care. If you buy the book, you own the material and can copy it. / Haven't you heard of fair use?)

3. What type of technology is in wide use among English language teachers at the University?

4. How far is the University - in driving minutes - from the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?

5. What is the maximum number of students per class (if there is one)?

6. How many contact hours per week do English language teachers have to work? Is there overtime?

7. What type of housing is generally afforded by the compensation package (one/two/three bedroom, spacious and clean, or otherwise)?

8. Do English language students in the department of languages and translation end up studying religious sciences at the University or only secular subjects?

9. Besides summer vacation, does the University give paid vacations for the two 'Eids?

10. When during the academic year can English language teachers request exit/re-entry visas and is it difficult to obtain them?

Thanks!

9. Yes.
10. You pay for multiple entry visa. according to more experienced KSA EFLers. it will cost you 200 SR and 2 weeks to obtain after your iqama.

Copyright in the magic kingdom!
Forget about the copyright in the magic kingdom! Everything is copy permitted and encouraged, from computer softwares to Hip Hop clothing!!
Nobody cares; you can copy a whole book from back to back!

I hope the poster gold is around to answer these questions.

If you check the web site of Taibah University, you will find that it provides different subjects, from religious studies to Engineering, so students may choose any subject they want to study.

1. Which books are in use for the English language courses? Is there an interest among teachers to keep the materials appropriate?

A. I will check this for you.

2. Is there a policy regarding copyright that English language teachers must abide by? (We respect and honor it, obtaining permissions for all photocopies. / We don't care. If you buy the book, you own the material and can copy it. / Haven't you heard of fair use?)

A. What are you talking about!!! copyright!!!

3. What type of technology is in wide use among English language teachers at the University?

A. LCD projectors and whiteboards are very common.

4. How far is the University - in driving minutes - from the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?

A. About 15 minutes. You take Al-Salam road from the university to the Haram. You can park your car under Haram for 1 SR/hr.

5. What is the maximum number of students per class (if there is one)?

A. Generally 70 students.

6. How many contact hours per week do English language teachers have to work? Is there overtime?

A. Assistant prof. 14 hrs and associate prof. about 12 hours in most departments.

7. What type of housing is generally afforded by the compensation package (one/two/three bedroom, spacious and clean, or otherwise)?

A. 25,000 SR/per year cash. I live in three bedrooms apartment 10 min from Haram for 24,000 SR/year.

8. Do English language students in the department of languages and translation end up studying religious sciences at the University or only secular subjects?

A. I will ask for you. All students are required to study religion including students of college of science.

9. Besides summer vacation, does the University give paid vacations for the two 'Eids?

A. Yes. You will need exit visa (200 SR). They are nasty on this sometimes.

10. When during the academic year can English language teachers request exit/re-entry visas and is it difficult to obtain them?

A. Yes, but they will deduct those days from your salary. It is not difficult though to obain exit visa but you have to have a reason. You can come up with a reason such as a conference and present a report after your return.

Housing and Furniture:
Housing is little limited. The nice area I recommend is Al-Azhari. It is next to Al-Aqeeq International school and more diverse than other areas. A nice apartment ranges from 18 to 24 k SR per year. The other area is Sayed Al-Shohada. It is close to Al-Msjed Al-Nabawi. You can walk to Haram. Those two areas are the best from my point of view. You can find decent apartments in other places but they are generally old ones and will need some renovations.

You can get the furniture from Al-Heraj. There are two sections; the old furniture and the new furniture. The old furniture is so bad and very disgusting. Your furniture and the electronics will go above the 12,500 SR for furniture allowance. It depends on your wife life style. For example: a nice bedroom and two small ones for my two kids cost about 7,000 SR. The electronics cost about 12,000 SR. Things are getting expensive in Madina. A GMC car of 1999 cost 41,000 SR. You have to bring some money with you since the university will give you the 25,000 (housing allowance) and 12,500 SR (furniture allowance) after two to three weeks at least from your arrivals.

ma sha Allah la quwwata illa billah

It's true what one hears about the people of Madinah: helpful, forthcoming, nice, accomodating. Surely, the world would be a better place if everybody went and lived there for a year, or even a day.

Many thanks!

Are you saying that the people of Madinah, esp. the locals, don't throw rubbish onto the streets? That's in the blood of all Saudis....

THE EXCLUSION ZONE and throwing rubbish onto the streets are two little things practiced by the kingdom of humanity. The list includes cheating, lying, slavery, denying you exit visa, chip-chop square, and discrimination by law, and ..

I am ashamed of the exclusion zone. I do apologize for all non-Moslem friends on the forum for this. Saudi Arabia is the worst example as a Moslem country. I have been treated fairly everywhere else but Saudi Arabia.

If you are a Saudi, you get a raise in your salary if you use a computer or deal with chemicals. Others go to hell!
