Hi, just a musing post here....

I've always worked at schools where I've done my own planning and had full control within the syllabus but am now facing a situation where I may be teaching other people's materials.

This has got me thinking:

In people's experience is DIY more common than not? In other words have I just been lucky/unlucky (depending on your point of view)?

Is teaching other people's lessons/materials really so bad?

Depends upon the resources. My first year, I was lucky and we used solid recognised texts. Another year, another school and guess what, the curriculum is junk. I spend more time helping the Chinese teachers review the material for mistakes and plan around them than on my own lesson planning. In a way though it's good for me, it forces me to decide for myself what I think is important and worth teaching. It also depends upon your own independence/laziness ratio.

My first job used New interchange, but we were expected to suppliment with streamline and the company's book. Here, the school wrote their own curriculum and I'm supplimenting a lot. But, the school;s happy if the kids are learning English.
