A public transport system is only feasible where there is a fairly dense population. And of course lot's of cars, or a city planned around the car like Riyadh, means that there is a shortage of people wishing to use public transport.
What you see a lot of in Saudi is the shared taxi system. You pay the same as you would on a Saptco bus for a journey between two towns for example (so six of you doing Jubail-Khobar would pay 15SR x 6 or maybe 20SR x6 now). This of course is no use for women. |

Perhaps you could visit and confirm your prejudices. You will need a lot of time though, it is a huge and varied country...

Surprising comments. I remember using public transport in San Francisco and New Orleans, among other places, many years ago and it seemed fine. Even then SF had the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).
Public transport is almost non-existent in the Gulf and what there is comes as a shock to us ''westerners''. Trains, frequent bus services into the city from the airport? Forget it. |

So, Sheikh, based on your experience, which transport system is better, the UK or the USA one? And why?
I find the underground in London awful, especially on Friday afternoon!

Well, Uncle Scot, the US is not a nation; it is a huge country with some areas considered 'developed' and others are 'under-developed'! |

North-east Asian nations have good mass transit systems. Seoul has the most extensive transit system I've ever seen....and it keeps growing (a few kilometers every year).
In comparison, Toronto's mass transit system is a joke. The drivers keep going on strike! The city has added only a few kilometers in the last 20 years of existance. |

Personally I find the London underground expensive, crowded and dirty every day of the week, not just Friday. The last time I was in UK I used public transport extensively in Glasgow and was impressed. Bit expensive, though. |

There's a regular bus service from Dammam airport to Dammam and Khobar. |

007,
" the SAPTCO bus system is an awful system, and is used mostly by the foreigners (Banghalis, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Philipinno, Siri Lankan, etc) and by working 2nd class Saudis!"
Does this make it awful?

Hi,
funny how this thread began with a request for info on the Saudia Driving Test and mushroomed into a general discussion about the Saudia transport system!

Funny? I 'd say this side tracking-derailing is rather typical, as most threads go, that have limited interest or limited responses directly related to the OP's original question. Go with the flow.... |

Balzac, did you pass your Saudi Driving Test? And how was it?
BTW, did the examiner ask the question about the crossroads and the camel? |
