The pay rates at these Cheng Fu universities are not very high and many of their "prospective teachers" are involved in some exchange programs with western universities. Thus, they can still find PhD's with a 5000 RMB a month stipend.
The students are not much better either, many are from elite-CCP or corruption-business families and are very nationalistic.
Be prepared to endure these types of students who will laugh in your face at your 5000 RMB a month salary. (They spend this amount a day shopping)
The 3rd tier universities have the students that are happy to be there, not super rich or connected. They usually want to learn with dreams of going abroad in the future with a better attitude towards Western countries and culture.
For subject area teaching- you will need a PhD to teach subject areas at the university level 99% of the time. They also desire MA Ed/TESOL App ling types for their FLTC positions.
Working at one of these places is humbling for most FT's as you park your bicycle next to the BMW and Benz Chinese teaching staff areas. The average Chinese teacher pay at these universities is 20,000+ RMB a month with 30,000 as the norm. |

informative, thanks
must say, i know plenty of chinese teachers at tsinghua who say they need to do extra work outside the uni in order to get by. so, in some cases at least, i think they don't earn much. |

| So between a normal u. in Hunan and a 1st tier school in Beijing, the teaching would be more enjoyable at the former? Probably similar to many schools in the states, actually, where the top tier schools are full of legacy numb-nuts following in mommy and daddy's footsteps... |

having taught at a normal "Normal" university in Hebei, and one of the two top unis in Beijing, i can definitely say that the students at the second were more fun to teach - more open-minded, more worldly, more intellectually passionate.
a qualification: the top uni also does a "foundation" program, with super-rich kids who didnt get high scores, and who are paying insane amounts to study there for a year before then going on to a UK/US/Aussie university. those kids arent so much fun. |
