Saudi British Centre in Malaz is a lame place to work.
There are other satellite centres in Jeddah etc.
Saudi British Institute may be a name change. |

I wouldn't recommend them. They only employ Brits and Americans with 2 days experience, willing to share accommodation that's miles out of town. No families. It's a hire & fire outfit for new arrivals in KSA. |

Thank you for your posts, it's much appreciated. They did make me an offer, but it was a ridiculous one.

Dear jabberjaw,
Are you familiar with Riyadh? Al Malaz is where the race track is. It's not too far from Batha.
Regards,

They offered me 8100/month.
Further to that I don't know much about them, but would like to. |

Well, the main thing is that they don't pay well. They hire mostly Jordanians and Syrians and Saudis to work for them. They don't want to pay the money to put you on a secure compound, so they'll just give you a little money and expect you to find an apartment somewhere in town. Personally, I wouldn't work for an employer that doesn't care enough about my security to pay the money to put me on a compound, but it's up to you what you want to do. |

Aside from the issue of low salary, I am wondering why you think it is more secure to live on a compound? I have been living in an apartment building in the Malaz area for over 5 years now and have never felt insecure in any way about my safety. I walk to work and move about the area freely.
I think this notion of security in KSA amounts to a personal level of paranoia. To each his / her own.
If one is paranoid about security, I don't think living on a compound will help all that much. You still have to go out shopping and leave the compound to go to work etc. I think such fears are mostly in one's head!
Salary is one issue that is worthy to consider. However, compound life or not is a personal choice, but to choose it based upon notions of security is just a paranoid dellusion. |

It is the "ARAMCO Mentality". Some people do not feel safe unless they are in a place that looks like the Canal Zone. |

I agree.
While a single woman might feel uncomfortable - or even unsafe - living in a street-side apartment, in most cases it's hard to see how a compound is 'safer' than such an arrangement. Of course, for many people a compound provides the most congenial living environment, but safer?
If terrorist attacks are the issue, surely it's worth pointing out that it has of course been compounds, not private residences, which have been the targets of such attacks. |

That's why it's important to live on a compound that is not right next to a major street and is not surrounded by a bunch of houses with Saudis living in them. Eskan and the BAE compound in Janadariya are secure in that they have a lot of space between the actual compound and the Saudi residential areas outside them, not to mention the trenches, the fences, and the armed guards and checkpoints.
It's also worth pointing out that if you live on a compound the religious police are less likely to be meddling in your affairs. If you live out in public around a bunch of Saudis, then there's nothing stopping one of your neighbors or the apartment guard from calling the religious police if you have any visitors of the opposite sex which could easily lead to you getting fired.

There will always be people who think like you. You think I'm paranoid and I think you're careless. It's up to each person to make up their mind about how they want to live. A good compound will have places for you to shop. I only ever left my compound when I went to work and came back. There was a bank at work and I could get gas on the way to work early in the morning. We had a clinic on the compound, too. Of course the main issue regarding security is the traffic. The less I had to go out in public and face those crazy Middle Eastern drivers, the better off I was. That's the main reason it's more secure to live on a compound where you've got everything you need right there on the compound. |
