O yeah Saint...
How do we go about getting these jobs for RM 8000+ then>? |
I am kind of lucky because I am a teacher from Ontario and there are two schools in KL that use Ontario curriculum. In order to use the curriculum, they must hire mostly Ontario teacher.
Your best chance is international schools, but I imagine that competition is heavy. |

There's also the British Council who pay about 8,000 per month. I'm not sure that jobs come up too regularly though.
On a side note, how much does an apartment (KL) with a swimming pool cost per month? I figured that it was possible to get one for about 1000? Is this accurate? One bedroom would be ok, but two would be better.
Also, is playing football (soccer) a big thing in Malaysia? How about poker?
Thanks. |

A nice resort condo with three bedrooms is RM 2,500 in Sunway. I looked at an absolute dump yesterday, but the complex had a swimming pool. The agent quoted RM 1,300. This place was also three bedrooms. |

I taught for the State Univ of New York at Buffalo's Malaysia program back in '86-87. It was my first foray into Asia and it was certainly nice, and some years later I wound up marrying a Malaysian-Chinese. But I would have to be offered at least 10,000 to consider living there nowadays. The Malay government is becoming way too Wahhabi-Islamic. Too many Malay women are scarf-covered and there are too many religious police running around busting down doors to demand marriage certificates of couples--even an elderly American couple on vacation in Langkawi got raided! They got so frightened they went straight home. Malay parliamentarians brandish their daggers and yammer about shedding blood to keep their Malay special privileges. Shariah courts force Hindus in some cases to be Muslim whether they want to or not. If you're American, you're an evil Jew in the eyes of most Malays, especially government people. Overall, the Malay government tries to be more Arab than the Arabs, and Arabs are actually far friendlier, at least in the UAE, than Malays, who try to outdo each other in Islamist mentality.
My Malaysian-Chinese sister-in-law tells me all this has no impact on her Chinese community...but I am convinced that someday soon, it will.
P.S. To keep up-to-date on Malaysian life and sociopolitical issues, read malaysiakini.com, an online daily newspaper. It's about the only thing the government doesn't censor...although they just love prosecuting individual bloggers....much like the mainland Chinese government abhors freedom of speech. |

I found a store that sells beers for about $1 a can.
San Miguel = RM 3.80
Beer Chang = RM 3.60
It's about a ten minute walk from my house in Subang Jaya. I feel like it's possible to save money in Malaysia now. |

malaysiakini is still a corporate site.
For a much better insight into what's happening in Malaysia politically, economically, sociologically, and all other ways, this is the site to read regularly:
http://www.jeffooi.com/
It's been a thorn in the government's side for several years.

I am in Thailand, but I like KL and wonder-periodically-whether I should go to Malaysia.
Is there a site for teachers?
Anyone have recent experience?
Are there a lot of jobs going?

Where do the unis and Intl schools advertise?
Is there a sticky or list of all the unis?
Is there a list which ranks them also?
How will I know if I get a job at a good one?
Do the unis have clock in and 8-5 hours, or can you drift out when your class is over?
Is there part-time work?

Post it here. I live in college central and can tell you if it's a good one

My school has flexible hours, but you must be on campus for six hours. I usually leave right after my last class. My classes are from 8 am - 2:15.
Is there part-time work?
I work one class OT. Tuition is very big here. I haven't done it yet, but now that I'm more comfortable in my job, I may look into it.

Ok, mine is a little different -
I am looking for a job in Brunei, but may not get one 'in time' matching the end of my job/lease here in Korea at the beginning of July.
If that happens, I would pick up & head over to Malaysia for a combined Brunei 'on the ground' job hunt & Malaysia beach/scuba/nightlife R&R. The question is, which side of Malaysia (Sarawak or Sabah) will better meet those needs?
Should I be basing myself in Miri, or somewhere around Labuan or KK? I'll have a fair bit of cash, but looking towards something lower-cost in case I may have to wait out 1 month - 6 weeks.
Food will not be a problem; it is more good value accommodations, computer/internet access (for the job part) beach time, accessible scuba (currently rescue certified), and fun stuff on the night owl side.
Thanks for any advice/opinions here.
Regards,
Glen

I'm so happy I came across this thread. I was looking to work in Singapore originally, but Malaysia is looking really viable now. I saw a great posting for a pre-university/university school (I'm hoping I could teach ESL and 1st and 2nd year university courses with my MA degree).
Do you know anything about the job market? How active is it? Do you know of any foreign nationals of colour? Is the job market hostile to people of colour from the US/Canada or the Caribbean?
Any information that you could provide would be fantastic.
Thanks!
P.S. Saint if you still visit the boards, could I talk to you via PM? |
