TC... Oman and the UAE have "liquor licenses" and you can buy booze in government stores for home consumption. Doesn't Qatar have the same?

Qatar does have a liquor distribution centre (QDC) where you can buy beer/wine/spirits and it does offer a good range (given this is a muslim country). You need a letter from your sponsor, QAR1000 and transportation to the centre - it's not really a "convenient" place to visit. The amount of your liquor license limit is based on a percentage of your salary and you must have your permit with you in order to enter the facility and must present it at the point of purchase.

Like most of the other GCC countries, officially, you are not allowed to purchase booze for others, transport it anywhere but directly home, and you are the only consumer of the goods. There was an incident earlier this year where two people were seen transferring (not consuming or intending to consume) some bottles from the boot of one car to another (they had travelled to QDC together and stopped at their place of employment to pick up the other guy's car). Both were deported.

That said, if you're discrete (carry the stuff in a gym bag for Pete's sake) you're OK to take a few tins or a bottle with you to a friend's house for dinner.

So what's the going rate for a lecturer at QU? It would have to be at least 14,000 to 16,000......

Given the rate of inflation in Qatar, does the Uni give quarterly increments as some government agencies do?

Yeah... right... in our dreams...

The salary at QU is pretty close to what the rest of the Gulf is paying and the costs in Qatar are similar. Just like every university in the area, you get a raise when you renew your contract unless it stipulates annual raises - which has become very rare.

VS, the liquor license question has already been answered. One more thing: upon cancelling it, you get the QR1,000 back. The one and only store in Doha is well stocked and prices are, as can be expected, pretty expensive.

Word, about salary at QU, it depends on qualifications and experience. My best guess is that the lowest end of the scale is at about QR12,000-13,000. However people with more experience and/or a PhD can start at about QR15,000.

Everyone at the job fair seems to get the same informational sheet which included the salary. It was around 13,700 dirhams/months.

VS, the HCT give its employees a straight 4% pay rise annually. It used to be 6% until last year when a new formula was...um...formulated. I take it that the automatic increment didn't exist when you were there?

salary seems to be on par wid the rest o the region but no credit for experience, guys right outta grad school wid no experience earn the same as people wid 10 years or more. sore point.

No doubt-a great offer for a newbie, but less attractive for the seasoned vet. Perhaps this will shift.

- lotta testing moolah out there fer invigilatin TOEFL/ACT, etc.
- limit on level supervisors service time - 3 yrs but better 'n nuttin
- data input system improvin shwa shwa
- info distro system much better
- greaty partyin at AlWaab -the place ta be if yer single (people celebratin promos and bonuses)
- big end o' year bash planned at 5 star, hope food's good
-lotta release time fer the lucky dudes who make it into admin type yob jobs
- lotta good people but some just ain't got experience!!
- bonuses if ya get on the bandwagon

Downers

- kids makin a mess at Al Waab - but still better 'n before
- keepin us busy til end of semester - non-stop work work
- too much project work
- appraisal system still needs workin on, too much bias & unfair appraisal by people who ain't gotta a clue! -
- stillnot enuff transparency
- too many good people shifte & shafted again
- no choice for shift - ya get what they give (no consideration!!!!!)
- maybe goin back ta 18 hrs teachin
- need more flexibility
- tricky trio still around & still callin the shots
- honcho still in tight control, needs ta be more flexible
- teachers have too much non teachin stuff ta do
- good people still leavin & checkin out
- spyin scene alive & well, especially round exam time so cover yerself

Basic Scenario

things R gettin better but it's gonna take time & patience
the management need to be more teacher friendly & listen to people
they gotta be more reasonable & realistic when makin the appraisals & stop humiliatin people 'n puttin them down.

All in all - gettin better.

Some people had great expectations. Now they've been reduced.
Too much work, appraisals, e-portfolios, student evaluations, spying,
FIRs, the list goes on. They painted a very different picture at the interview. I'd say ground down expectations.

If one has read this board before being hired, one would arrive with more realistic expectations.

Poor overworked things... go back to your home country and get an office job... pay taxes... work 50 hours a week at the desk... pay your rent... have few holidays...

Thanks for that. I took your advice and started checking the posts (too late, to be sure). I should have checked before, you're 100% right about that.

If you've never been in the ME or the Arab world, you naturally will have unrealistic expectations. You don't know what to expect. For many people there is a major experience of culture shock. This person seems to be suffering from a bout of CS.
