My salary history in Japan:

Eikaiwa: first year 255,000 yen, second year 275,000 yen, third year (max salary as a teacher there) 285,000. Housing subsidized at 39,000 yen.

Changed jobs

Private high school though a company not named interac: 250,000 plus a rent free house, going on second year soon - changing high school and location, but not the company- 290,000 and no accommodation. I don't know what the how high the salary goes. The vacation time is substantial.

but is this limited to only Japan? Obviously not? HOwever, it would be good to hear the frequency you get this reaction in Japan as opposed to teaching in any other country.

Nothing makes teaching in Japan better than anywhere else, certainly not better than back home, US/Canada.

The only reason I taught overseas was to see new cultures and understand them. It was a great way to see the world while spending no money of my own and in fact making some.

I also couldn't find anything back home, being fresh out of university with an English degree.

I evantually studied B.Ed TESL and realized that I was the farthest thing from a teacher while overseas. Overseas very few know how to teach, certainly I wasn't one of them, (no offence to all the teachers there, but a month certificate just doesn't cut it) and very few know how to learn the English language. The focus was purely grammar and vocab. The two do not add up to language.
