For what its worth out here in Xinjiang they do have the two year rule in effect. You can only teach 2 years at any school or college and then you have to leave that school for 2 years and then you can back and teach again for two years, leave for 2 years, come back for 2 years up to a max of 10 years at any one school.

They offered me a third year, but were firmly denied by the powers to be in Urumqi. We make no exceptions.

They did say because they are an autonomous region they can sort of bend the rules to fit their needs, hence the ten-year rule being bent to mean 10 years at any one school.

Out of interest, has anyone on here ever gone to register at the local police station when, say, staying with friends in another town or city?

I haven't stayed in the homes of any Chinese friends in the current pre-Olympics security 'climate'.

However, in the recent past, I have stayed, for up to a week at times, in the homes of Chinese friends in Jiujiang (Jiangxi), Taizhou (Zhejiang) and in Hangzhou.

On each of those occasions I suggested to my hosts that I should register at the local Police Station - but, my hosts claimed that it was "not necessary". So, I did not register on those 5 occasions.

Given the current situation, I think it would be prudent to register, as required!
