Hello everyone,

I am a recent college graduate, currently looking for my first job teaching ESL overseas. I posted my resume to the resume board here, and was utterly overwhelmed by the responses I received. My biggest concern has to do with recruiters - Is it normal to be hired through a recruiter? Do recruiters cost money, and if so, how much is normal to pay? Are there any companies/recruiters that I should beware of? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

Maria

Different people have different ideas about using a recruiter.

Myself, I think it is good to be able to communicate directly with the school and also to ask current/former teachers at the school what the think of the school. That may be difficult to do via a recruiter.

Where are you looking to teach?

Unless you have a solid recommendation for a specific recruiter- I would go with a direct hire. Write directly to the schools you are interested in. You are more likely to get accurate information directly from the source.

Of course recruiters take a fee of some sort, if not directly from you then it is arranged with the school upon the successful recruitment of a teacher.

Don't pay to get a job. REcruiters can be ok, but ask on the boards before going with one. They're usually more concerened with money than your happiness.
