What is wrong with this place? Why does Indonesia attract so many sketchy teachers? I came here with the intention of teaching, traveling and meeting some other teachers to have a drink with once in a while. Are there any other young, single female teachers in Indo? Most teachers I have met are here for the wrong reasonsDrugs and prostitutes. I cant believe how some people can get a job here. |

Yes there are female teachers that are single and working in Jakarta.
I know of about 6. Maybe you weren't looking in the right places |

Maybe not but Jakarta is a big city and 6 still seems like a very small number. I met a couple of female teachers in Bali once who had just finished their contract and they had nothig but bad things to say. I don't have anything against Jakarta or Indonesia, but I can't get over some of the teachers I have met here and what their "hobbies" are. Tania maybe you live in one of the better southern parts of JKT. |

Indo 3, I can understand your frustration to some degree but to be honest, Indonesia and Jakarta in particular, is not the kind of place that really caters for expat (bule) women. I think people really need to carefully research the places they earmark as places to work before venturing out there into the big, bad world.
Prostitution is a way of life in any poor country, particularly in Asia, and so follows the trade from outside of its shores. Also I have noticed there are many bule guys (myself included) who marry local ladies but very few bule women marrying local guys. And I for one can't imagine myself staying here for any length of time if not for personal reasons. |

I have only met 2 guys here who I thought were really bad types. Evrybody else in my school were pretty good. We all liked to go out and drink sometimes, but I didn't see that much in the way of drugs and prostitutes. Maybe I wasnt looking.
Not that I would ever do those things myself, but people have told me here that prostitutiton is legal. If its legal then what's the big beef about? I can see you not wanting to be around people breaking locaL laws with drugs and things but not with poeple that aren't doing anything illegal?
I think the schools are much worse then the teachers in Indonesia from what I've seen so far.
Anyway, good luck. |

Hmm I live in sth Jakarta in a kost'an ) not a flashy mansion!! I dont hang out with the bule crowds.. there's nothing wrong with the other expats or the people at work.. its just my personal choice
But yes of course you hear some stories of what went on the weekend, but who cares, its their life. Half of the stories are probably made up anyway
Actually Im marrying my Indonesian man of 3 years in March next year here in Jakarta. The are a fair few foreign women married to Indonesian men, and there is even a forum on MSN for this However most of the members usually find their men in Bali not Jakarta
The reason why I think I like being here, is because I grew up in Jakarta (attended highschool at JIS for about 5 years) and it had a huge impact on my life and where it was heading..
Going home to Australia and trying to adapt to life and uni back there was horrible! It was so hard trying to fit in with the teenagers back in Australia, which I had nothing in common with.
I always knew that I would return here to work, and I have never been happier since I made the move
I would be one of the few people that actually likes Jakarta. Sure it gets me grumpy sometimes...but I chose to live here again so its something I have to put up with...such is life |

Yes, there are these types and those types as have been observed before..tell me, is it the fault of the young party-going male teachers that you cannot find any female companions in Jakarta? Are they to blame for that, too? Moreover, that kind of lifestyle is tried and tested..we should be much more concerned about middle-aged American men like 'eclectic' (the NEWBIE questions dude) purposely coming to teach here intent on finding himself a 'muslim wife' fresh from the mould..nice..I believe motives like that are far more questionable than a guy just going out and having fun at the weekend! adios |

Concerning Western women marrying Indonesian men, it depends where you go...Bandung is full of expat women who live there long-term with their Indonesian families. In 2001, when my Indonesian partner was applying for a PR spouse visa to Australia, the consular official who interviewed him told me that this was her f/t job and she saw just as many male as female applicants.
Ezekiel, couldn't agree more with your comments on eclectic-the guy is truly offensive and his posts border on being misogynist, honest or not! A dose of long hours teaching bored rich teenagers in a dodgy McSchool for a minimum wage would be just the thing. |

I'm not a teacher, but I'm in the same boat, I'm an Australian male over here as a consultant and I can't, for the life of me, find a single western woman in this town to date.
No interest in the locals and definately no interest in the ayam scene, so where can I find a gorgeous teacher?
Somebody told me about hanging out at the Satu Lagi bar, or De Hooi? at Pondok Indah, but all I saw was wall to wall male bules and a smattering of ayams.
I don't want to plant myself at a bar anyway, so how do I get in touch with one of these great women? |

There is a personal ads section on expat.or.id
Each to his/her own, but aren't there enough educated and pretty Indonesian women in Jakarta to keep a chap occupied? After a few years out here I find your average bule female to be shaped rather oddly. |
