| Hi, I'm new to the forum but like many others I've been a lurker for a while. I've finished my interview process and have accepted a position with Nova tentatively in the first week of April. First off I'm wondering if there are any other people leaving around the same time I am so we can share thoughts or talk before we get there. I also have another question, I was thinking of starting a bank account with the Bank of Hong Kong and I'm wondering if there are any branches in Japan which would make it easier to transfer funds or pay my bills. I've read all the stickies about transfering funds but I was told about the bank from a friend andt I want to see if that is true from someone there. Thx. |

| Sending or transferring money is no problem here. You can send it to any account you want. If you want to pay bills from Japan, do it online. Make sure you can do it from your bank in Canada. I do. |

| I'm heading to Japan to work for Nova in about 4 weeks. I lived in Japan for 3 years as a JET so I have a fairly good routine for money transfers and bills. I use an online bill paying service called Paytrust. I don't know if Canada has something similar but you might check. I have always used Lloyd's of London to transfer money to my account in America. Lloyd's charges Y2000 per transfer but the money is usually in your account the next business day, which is quite a bit faster than any other transfer. Check with your bank to see if they offer online banking/bill paying too. |

I've used Lloyds before and think they are great.

First, email them and they will send you an application. Then fill out the form and they will let you know step by step how it is done. Very easy, but it takes about 2 weeks to set up an account initially. Thereafter, it can be done in a few minutes from any ATM in Japan. |

| When you establish your Japanese bank account, ask for assitance in getting a money transfer card from the ATM machine. To get this card, you must put in your ATM card and then go to the appropriate screen and enter the Lloyd's info. This is usually all in Japanese so ask for help. After entering the info, the ATM will spit out a thick tan paper ATM card with your info. When you make a money transfer, you put in your ATM card, pick the right screen, stick in your money transfer card, enter the amount, confirm, and enter. Of course this is the simplified version and my experience as a Fukuoka Bank account holder. Your procedure may be different. |
